I just bought a bike with Canti's and the spring tension that pulls the brakes apart doesn't seem to be stout enough. Can I just bend the spring a bit? Thanks.
No need to, there should be three holes on the mount boss. Just notch it up a hole.

What kind of canti's? Shimano made a TON of cantilever brakes that had gray nylon barrels that surround the return springs. When those barrels crack you lose all of the return spring pressure. The quick, dirty solution is to bind the barrel together with a zip tie or a piece of wire. A better solution is to get replacement barrels from Shimano. The best solution is to replace them with V-brakes.

These are Tektro's, on a Jamis Coda. I do see that there appear to be three holes that may hold the lower end of the spring, so I will do a little exploring after dinner. Thanks again.

Also, make sure that the cantilever posts on the frame are free of paint and well lubricated with light grease.
