Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Beater showoff- Show off your beater single/fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. This thread will probably end up being filled with pictures of bikes much nicer than my non-beater. :(

I was wondering how long it would take for someone
to make the joke that a ridiculously expensive carbon
fiber bike was their "beater."

It was the third picture posted.

Sorry, I was making spring rolls, otherwise I would've made #2.

Flat black paintjob from a rattle-can? Check.
Unsightly gaps from putting 700c wheels in a frame that came with 27" wheels? Check.
Nashbar special $40 cranks, and miscellaneous parts from the garage to complete the build? Check.

Nearly perfect coffee-shop, grocery-store, bar-hopping bike? Hell yeah.

Though it does part from the "beater" aesthetic somewhat in that it has decent, but certainly not extravagant, wheels. Hand built (By moi.) from Mavic Open Pros laced to IRO hubs with DT double-butted 15/16 ga. spokes.

trons, I went colorblind looking at that bike, in the best possible way.

This beast resides in Philly: completely shot Trans Am saddle, early 90s LX crank with the extractor threads stripped, XT/F219 wheel with an 8 speed XT cassette salt-welded on after a winter's use in Montreal, a rear brake made up of half an Avid and half a Deore caliper. Singlespeeded the cheapo way, to get whatever use is left out of the cassette and large chainring.

This beast lives in Montreal: it's my winter bike in the winter, quick errand beast when I don't wanna put on clipless shoes to go pick up a six pack or a head of lettuce in the summer. Now featuring a hydro disc. Rear wheel's a fixed mtn one from IRO, running a magic gear, but now on an STX road double crank instead of the LX 300 touring triple that was on there.

Do I spy a superfluous chain tensioner mounted on a der. hanger?
I like!

Hee hee, after my derailleur went into the spokes, I singlespeeded it with a cheap kit, and after a couple of months the bolt for the tensioner was rusted into the hanger; when I went to remove it after I got a fixed wheel, the bolt easily stripped. I even tried cutting big slats into the head with a dremel to use a big screwdriver, but the first try sheared off two big hunks of the bolt, so I'm stuck with it.

Well, the streets in downtown are horrid at the moment as they're in the middle of a reconstruction of the streets down there...They'll be done soon though...Hopefully by the time you come back, the fresh pavement will be in place for you and others to enjoy...I know I will!

bullet proof cranks

low-end mavic rims.

some $3 saddle i found at broadway bike school replaced the ****ty vinyl srooks saddle that was on there.

"I'm on my beater bike" Translation: I had this baby custom-made in Tuscany using titanium blessed by the Pope. I took it to a wind tunnel and it disappeared. It weighs less than a fart and costs more than a divorce."

Interesting locking technique. I guess someone would have to pull the chain and ring to get the bike to roll away even.

No no, that's not exactly it. There's an eye-bolt in the wall, put there for the bike folks. Our town likes us. :)
