Touring - What front rack for my fork/panniers?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I already have some old Ortlieb Sport Packer Classic front panniers. My miyata 610 does have axel dropout eyelets, but doesn't have midfork braze-ons, so I was wondering what rack I should get. I am not going to load these too heavy, and I am looking to save some money here... What rack would be somewhat cheap and would work okay with the QL-1 mounting system and just like, p-clamps or maybe the tubus lowrider adapters (LM-1). Would I be okay even with like a nashbar cheapo rack? Thanks for helping me decide, this is really the last purchase I need to make before my upcoming tour.

EDIT - my bike has 27 inch wheels, but I guess if I am using the adapters or p-clamps that shouldn't matter...

Have you done a search? This has been discussed many many times in the past.

Yes. But you can't search 3 letter/# combinations like ql-1 or lm-1, apparently.

Use Google to search this site. It works much better than the built-in search: site:www.bikeforums.net QL-1 (http://www.google.com/search?q=site:www.bikeforums.net+QL-1&ie=UTF-8)

P-clamps probably wouldn't be the best. I'd stay away from the old Blackburn Lowriders too. They have a plate across the top that interferes with Ortlieb attachment. Your best bet would probably be these (http://www.deltacycle.com/product.php?g=27) from Delta. They're pretty cheap and attach with a U-bolt. I used them -the U-bolt - for many years without problems on my 610.

Or you could also use the Old Man Mountain AC Lowrider (http://oldmanmountain.com/Front_Rack.htm) (bottom of the page). About the same cost as the Delta. I'd still use the U-bolt method.

I use an OMM AC Lowrider with U bolts and it works fine. I don't use Ortlieb though so I don't know if they fit.

Has anyone ever use the fork bracket instead of the U-bolt? It looks like it would be less likely to damage your front fork than a U-bolt...unless the U-bolt has some kind of padding. See picture at

Those are new. Never seen them before. They would work too. However the U-bolt really doesn't cause any problems.
