Normally Schwinns are pretty easy to identify, but this one sure has me scratching my head. I recieved it like the first picture shows. I knew it was a 60's continental, but the details are confusing me. The front chainring is a triple, which only came on the Super Continental I think. The serial number is H112541. 1961 I think, right? It came with Huret f/r deurrailers and a Schwinn Approved saddle. It has brazed on DT shifter mounts.

I want to build it to resemble it's past appearence, but I need to figure out what it is first! :p

I threw some parts on it to see if the frame was sound. During this, I changed the dead huret to a Shimano 600, and the short, rusty crank to a 175mm black crank.

Yup; Super Continental, but it'd have to be '62. The good pastor will be lusting in his heart -- I sure am.

I think it's a Continental that had the triple chainset put on it. An old Schwinn dealer told me that this was a popular modification at the time because of the 47t small chainring on the Varsinentals of that period. Here are what the downtube decals for the Super Continental look like.

I have a '78 Schwinn Continental that I am working on and have a few leftover bits if you're interested. Namely, those pesky top-tube cable guide inserts that you'll need if you want a full restoration. PM me if you want them.

Also I have:

(1) Both chainrings and the chain guard in great condition
(2) Kickstand
(3) Spoke protector disc
(4) Front derailleur...not so great shape
(5) Rear derailleur cable guide (screws into tab in front of dropout)

Would you be willing to part with the original pedals?

Thanks for the offer, but I am not a purist. The only parts I would need is the cable guide and spoke protector. I dont mind running the casing along the frame [or I could dig a few out the co-op rather easily], and I am not going to use a spoke protector. The pedals need to be rebuilt, but I am going to use them though.

I up graded my 75 continental to 21 speed and a list of other stuff. Old continentals are easy to work with, I think thay like to be upgraded.

The seat stays attach differently to the main triangle in the catalogue picture than in the photo. Is this difference attributable to frame size, bad artwork, or model year?

I like the early 1960s Continentals because of their standard 3-bolt (with 6-bolt 157mm BCD adaptors) chainring mounts, downtube shifters, and lack of pie plates.

From looking at the Lightweight Data Book, it seems to be a 1962 continental. The one main clue I have is the Weinmann sidepull that was on the back. 62' was the only year with those brakes.

I was reading the spec sheet, and was amazed that all the parts it had were low end in the 70's. This is good because the co-op is overflowing with these parts! :)

Good question John. I've noticed this about other gas pipe Schwinn "lightweights" that I assumed all used the same frame. I haven't spent the time researching it to give you the answer, but one of these days I will look into it.
