I'm trying to get the fork out to rebuild it but I cannot figure out how to get the damn thing out. When I pop off the top of the headset it looks like there is some sort of compression retainer ring that has a small split in it. I can't pry it off and don't want to trash my headset so anybody have any info on how to get the fork out???

The ring shouldn't be too horribly tight. Assuming its an aluminum steerer, shoot a little chain lube around the compression ring and either get a block of wood/rag and a hammer and tap the the steerer tube out, or find a rubber mallet if you have one and tap it out. Its a Pig, so I wouldn't worry too much about trashing it.
