Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. In a little over a month, my wife and I head to Italy for a couple of weeks. This is not a dedicated bike vacation (we have some sightseeing planned and a wedding to attend) but there will be biking. One day will be dedicated to riding the Madonna del Ghisallo - a very popular shrine to all things biking.
When I ride, I always ride with non-descript jerseys, I've never worn a team or club jersey as I don't race and personally don't feel the need to. However I want something for that Ghissalo ride, something that identifies me as American but not the flag in the face type. Being American doesn't mean the jersey is a USA jersey, but something that IDs me as being from the states. So far I can only come up with a couple of ideas:
1. I belong to Potomac Pedalers, a Washington DC area group. I actually don't participate in many of their activites, but I like to support them. Their jersey: http://www.bikepptc.org/pptc-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=0003JERSEY
2. 30 + years ago I went to the University of Wisconsin - Madison and lived there awhile. I feel in love with biking, my wife and my lifestyle there, I visit there every year. Their jersey: http://www.teamcyclist.com/store/Collegiate-Jersey-s-s-Wisconsin-ID_P3426C1817.cfm
Any input or other suggestions would be welcome. In the meantime I need to ride more so I can make it up that mountain!

Well I do love a good ale - thanks for the link. Only problem is I'll have to sample all of these ales shown in order to pick the right one - but by then I may have gained the weight I've been trying to lose!

Got me thinking - I did a google search on my favorite ale and lo and behold, they make one:http://store.dogfish.com/item/Bike_Jersey/709/Regular_Tees/14/index.htm
Only problem - I'd like to get something more than black shorts for this - something w/ a little green.
How about one with the Stars and Stripes emblazoned on it????

I like the idea of the Potomac Pedalers. It will be one-of-kind there, clearly from the states, and you have some connection. If I were going, I'd wear my club jersey.

I'd second that, even if it's just getting the club badge/name sewn or printed onto an existing jersey, with a discrete Stars and Stripes sewn onto a sleeve. It says you're American, you're proud of the fact (and us non-american's don't mind that, just aren't impressed with having it shoved in our faces) but then it gives some specific info about you with which to open a conversation.
Of course, having 'My support vehicle is a Corvette' might work too :D

How about this (http://www.gitabike.com/images_cart/gi_ssjy_team_brok_me.jpg) one.
Anyone w/ a sense of cycling history (pretty much any Italian) will appreciate your homage. Plus, it's Italian made, and it's got red, white, and blue. It's kind of like The Simpsons, it works on so many levels. ;)

Great suggestions all. Hmmm, I think it is between my local club and the Wage Peace that BluesDawg suggests. Always open for more suggestions!

Is there a "DC" jersey? I know there are several California jerseys I lust for.
If you're looking to not be run over I'd avoid the stars and strips, and particularly the ones with screaming eagles. Most of the world isn't very happy with the USA right now.
Perhaps a big 'ol custom "NOT MY PRESIDENT" jersey would help keep you safe.

I'm partial to the South Park "YOU GUYS SUCK" JERSEY". To be read by Democrats. And I didn't vote for the moron Pelosi.

Holy cow, when I read the first part of the post, this is the jersey I was going to suggest. The Italians have a sense of humor also.

I realize you are "The Weak Link]" and from KY, but you must realize that, being as she's a CA rep, you couldn't vote for her even if you wanted to.
Furthermore, there aren't a lot of democrats in Europe anyway, so they wouldn't have a chance to be reading it.

I didn't realize Barbara Pelosi is a Mormon. She hardly fits the profile. But then, I never realized Rosie is Baptist (Southern) or, for that matter, that Bill O'Reilly is Wiccan. Sometimes I feel so damned uninformed.

I have bought Jerseys in the past to support the US Cycling Team. This is the current one:

I love Pelosi. As a friend. But I didn't vote for her. Don't pull technicalities on me.
They're all Communists in Europe. Same difference as Democrats.
OK, calm down, it's just a joke.
Not really.
Well, a little.
