A Letter to the Editor I wrote was published Saturday, Enjoy! I believe this is a form of Advocacy!
Enjoy bicycle touring and commuting

I'm sure you have noticed the annual trend of gas prices rising in time for the summer season -- not that it's very summerlike. One answer to this is to ride your bike to work or on your vacation if you have the time.

There are several benefits to this lifestyle change: health, economy, and stress relief. It's said that every hour you spend exercising adds two hours to your life.

The reduction in stress is another major factor as well. Have a bad day at work? Take the long route and ride the stress out -- your wife, kids and family dog will thank you for it.

Now, the vacation aspect: My wife and I are doing a short bike tour this summer. The average cost of a camping bike tour is about $25 to $50 a day. You don't have to buy gas, and you actually get to see things. It's very cool to have a deer just amble across the road when you are rolling along at 10 mph, and you don't spook it. You get to see things you'll never even notice if you are blasting by at 70 mph in a sealed glass and steel box.

The best thing, though, is that it's just about the journey -- no complications, no worries about how far you are going to go.

We average about 40 miles a day on tour and take it easy and just have fun.

Nice letter, makes me wish I was in the situation where I could do some touring... maybe in the future.
Two things I'd like to say though.
1.) I just posted a thread in the "Living Car Free" (Living Carefree) forum about gas prices. Might make for an interesting read for those inclined.
2.) How dare you come to Michigan and not let me know you were going to be here!?!? :p

You make me want to go bike touring!

That might be why some people buy a good 'bent for touring as their first one, should they ever get the money and time.;)

Nice letter Mr Stormcrowe.

My elder son recently began joining the San Diego Bicycle Club on their Saturday morning rides and has invited me to join him, which sounds like a great father-son activity, at least for now, until he graduates beyond the "C-level" ride. I can probably still go the distance, but I never have had the speed or the paceline skills for the "A" and "B" rides.

I'll be back in a couple of weeks up in the UP, the wife and I are going up for a month or so to tour. We had planned an Indiana tour, but changed our minds and I just finished out the fastest change of plans for a tour I've ever made! :D

Since my parents haven't build anything on their property outside of Ontonagon yet, they stay in this nice set of cabins on the lake nearby. If you'd like the name of this place, let me know, and I can find out for you. Might be good to know in case you need a back-up plan.
