i live in college station, tx and am looking into getting a bike, and was thinking a cyclocross, for now atleast, it sounds to be the most versatile, but i am on a budget as a college student, i was hoping some of you guys could point me in the right general direction for a good, lower priced bike, i know of one cycling shop in college station, aggieland cycling, but know nothing about it, what are some good cycling shops on the the north side of houston as well, i make trips there fairly often

To be honest - you'll get more bang for your buck used. First thing to do however is figure out what size you are. You need to make sure you get a bike that fits you well.
I would stop by Aggieland and ride a few bikes, see what fits and what their pricing is like. When I was there (class of 87) they were a good shop and had fair prices. See if they carry any used bikes. Maybe check the local pawn shops and see what is out there. You will get more bang for your buck used, but run the chance of buying someone else's trash if you don't know what you are doing.
+1 to what Jsharr said. If you have a buddy local to ya that knows a lot about bikes you could run anything used by 'em and see what he thinks. If its ebay or online feel free to run it by us here.
