i built up a bike from a frame that was built for 27" rims, and i put new 700c wheels on it. the only problem with this is that my old brakes' shoes don't quite reach the rim. when i pull them all the way down, they do clinch the rim, but only with about 75% of their surface. They sort-of work right now, but i figure that when they get a little worn through, part of them is going to start touching the tire...
is there a solution for this situation? (besides getting a new fork/frame)
thanks.

I think there is an adaptor you can buy for the centre bolt , some one on here will know tho !
there are long reach brakes available... The ones used for Touring bikes...
Or, you can have the chainstay professionally shortened...

Another option could be to file the slotted holes in the yokes a little longer with a round rat tail file or a chain-saw sharpening file ,by your description it should not take a lot to make the blox line up with the rims ! just a thought

there is an article on sheldonbrown.com about making your own drop bolts to lower the brakes.

I think you can buy these at your LBS... all you have to do is weld it in place...

I've been wondering about this too. I just aquired a really sweet old '70s Schwinn Le Tour ten speed with center pull brakes and 27" wheels. I'm going to use it as my randenouring bike so I might switch to 700c wheels and tires. What is the difference in rim diameter between 700c and 27"?

cycletourist, 700c wheels are 622mm in diameter. 27" wheels are 685mm. so the difference is about 63mm = 2.48 inches. So the distance between the fork ceiling and tire is about 1.2 inches greater on 700c wheels.
i will see if i can come up with something as per the sheldon brown article, unless i find something at the LBS.
many thanks to everyone. it's good to know that there are products out there for that.

Hmmm.... sounds like there is not enough adjustment in my brakes to handle the difference. I guess I'll stick with 27" for as long as tires are available.

No, I don't think 27" = 645mm
700C = 622mm dia
27" = 630mm dia
thus there is 8mm difference.. you only need to adjust your brakes/pads 4mm lower...

Heh, I was trying to think back to when I did a 27"->700c swap on a bike and I knew the difference wasn't more than the brake adjustment range. I was lucky and that frame/brake combo allowed for the adjustment.
