Touring - Anyone rolling a Fuji Touring? (got a few questions for you)

If you have a Fuji Touring, i have a few questions-

1- do you like it / would you recomend it as a light duty (2-3 day trips C.C.ing the food) touring/road bike?
2- is the rear rack functional/sturdy?
3- does it come with fenders/can fenders be added? (my friend says they come with fenders, but the pics dont show them)
4- anyhting else you'd like to tell someone who's is thinking about buying one?

I picked up one for my daughter in 2005 (it was an NOS 2001) for $500 and it's a pretty good bike. Even at $900 (MSRP) it's still a pretty good bike. A Surly LHT would probably give it a good run for the money but those are still not out in big numbers yet.

The bike is a good touring bike, even for more then light duty. We carried full loads for 3 weeks on the Lewis and Clark Trial and it handled everything without issues...even with the stock wheels.

The rack on the 2001 model was a bit wimpy but it is cheap. A more robust rack would probably handle a lot better but the stock on is okay. I've become very partial to Tubus racks but that might be overkill for an inexpensive bike. They don't flex as much so your load is more stable but front and rear racks are going to set you back around $200.

The bike doesn't come with fenders (almost no touring bike and only a few commuter bikes do) but they would be an easy add-on.

About the only thing I'd suggest is trying to negotiate a crank...or at least chainrings... with lower gears. The 52/40/30 is a bit high for touring. You can easily put on 48/38/24 chainrings or swap the crank for a mountain bike crank. If nothing else, Nashbar has a Deore LX trekking crank for $48 which would work fine (you'd also need a new bottom bracket).

I have a 54 cm Fuji Touring that I really like for commuting and touring.

I agree with everything cyccommute said. It's a great tourer for the price. I didn't trust the stock rack and had it replaced with the Jandd Expedition, which was a perfect fit. SKS fenders also bolt on without hassle. I hated the stock seat and had it replaced with a Brooks B17. A few people (including me) have had problems with rear spoke breakage. My rear wheel was replaced under warranty--no problems after that. I have a feeling it was a bad batch of spokes. I slightly lowered the gearing by replacing the cassette.

Unfortunately, my bike is a little small for me, so I'll probably end up eBaying it. :(

Here's a photo of my Fuji Touring Bike. I used it for loaded touring, running errands, and just riding out in the country. I still have the stock rear rack and have had no problems. I did break a spoke on the rear wheel and had it rebuilt at a bike store in Madison, Wisconsin. I added SKS fenders; very easy to do. The stock seat was junk so I replaced it with a Brooks B-17. I like the bike a lot. It's a great bike for the price.

I swear by my Fuji touring, best toruing bike since my old Fuji S-12-S I had many years ago.

My rear rack looked a bit iffy to me as well,m but so far it has been fine. I have a Blackburn waiting in the wings just in case.

I never bothered with fenders. Just clean the bike on a regular basis and ya don't need them.

I think its the best touring bike at the price. Mine is a workhorse for me on my tours.

thanks for all the info. i think this is the bike i'm going to get. my friend works/worked for a local bike shop that sells fuji and he thinks he can get me a good deal on one. of course if i get it i'll post pics.

It rides well. I'd recommend it for heavy duty too. As bought new, it used to be some of the components were on the cheap side. By replacing those cheapy stuff, you can quickly upgrade the bike. First thing I changed out. The spokes. It's a good bike for the price. To do again, Maybe i'd go with the Trek 520, but I have no regrets. Really into touring . Get a Bruce Gordon, should you be doing anything seiouss.
