Commuting - How do you carry your golf clubs?

If you're a golfer and a biker, like I am, I wondering how you carry your clubs to a nearby course. Is there a bag out there that allows you to carry the clubs? The standard golf bags with double shoulder straps hang the bags too sideways to be safe for me. How just carrying a few clubs (for the range)... what solutions have you seen? I could not really find any decent ways to carry a golf bag.

My current solution is to just drive my car.

I saw a guy with his pull cart rigged to his seat post with some homemade piece of hardware. I hope you're not planning on riding your bike on the course?? If so, I think you'll be required to play golf in spandex and cycling shoes and ride your bike in argyle socks and shorts as well as wing tip golf shoes.

I'd use my kids' trailer. Assuming you have a trailer.

My brother and I used to carry clubs in golf bags designed with "backpack" straps. It was only 3 miles to the course, but we just threw them on our backs and rode a little slower. Since those hang weird for you, I might rig the wheel carrier as suggested if the trip isn't too far.

How much does it weigh?

You might be able to hack something together with a rack/panier deal with the clubs on one side and maybe a bag on the other with water/other supplies in it to counteract the weight? I sort of envision something along the lines of a double stacked milk crate with bungees holding it on the non-gear side of your rear tire maybe, or perhaps a milk crate with stakes sticking up to bungee the bag to?

Additionally if all you are carrying is about 3-5 clubs Perhaps taking some sort of cloth wrap with velcro and ties that wraps around the clubs snuggly with straps like backpack straps would work, rather than carry around a full bag?

Ideally, I'm looking for a small golf bag with backpack type straps that allow the bag to be a little more upright (kinda like the arrow bags an archer uses). With this, I can pull a few clubs out from my main bag if I just want to go to the range. And the process of getting it packed to go is really fast and simple since I just need to put it on my shoulders. I don't mind the extra weight on my back. I'll be able to bike faster and maneuver in traffic better than if I had a trailer.

The trailer is an option. I would have to be more careful since I'd be hauling something. It'll take time to strap the clubs down properly so that they don't fall out on a hill. Another downside is that it's harder to park the bike since I need to make sure the trailer's not in the way of a path or something. I'd also have to lock and secure the trailer down. A lot of work.

For actually playing a round, I'd have to take my main bag (20-25 lbs) and the pull cart. So I'll likely just use the car. However, one day I might try attaching the pull cart handle to the bike rack and see how that works. It just comes down to how well the attachment works. The pull cart has ball bearing bicycle type wheels, so it should be able to handler speeds up to 15mph.

You don't have to play with all 14 clubs. Just get those really small folding bags and carry about 4 clubs and you should be fine.

Driver, mid-Iron, Wedge and putter. If you can get a good score with only those clubs, you'll earn extra respect points. ;)

I haven;t tried it myself, yet, but this (http://traileron.com/products-original-traileron.html) looks like a slick setup. Cheaper then a trailer, unless you plan to use a trailer for other things. Light enough to leave on the bike, but easy to remove as it just goes on the seat post. Planning to buy one myself, once I get a new commuter type bike in the stable, don't want to test the strength of the CF post on my allez with this!

If it's literally just a couple... an inner tube (or something) wrapping 'em onto your top tube and sticking out the back? A bit lame, but cheap and keeps your hands free. Or maybe a (modified?) yoga mat bag?

My gf and I each have sunday bags. All you really need is a putter, 2-3 irons, and a 3 wood. Unless it's a huge course and you really need your #1.

It looks and kind of wears like a rifle bag, Cars give us much room.

My low-tech, money-scrunging, and very effective device is an old tentpole bag with velcro attached; I use two sets of doubled straps (one set to hold the bag to the bike, the other to hold the shafts fast). If you have a rack, you could put balls, etc on the other side to balance it out. If you had a big enough nylon bag, you could probably get all your clubs in there this way, but I'd probably opt to put a smaller bag on each side for weight.

I don't. My golf bag is home to many spiders...which is probably why I suck as bad as I do at playing golf.

Maybe I can even haul the bag with the pull cart on that. Where did you buy that trailer?

It's a Burley Flatbed. I modified it by getting rid of the stock reflectors, rotating the aluminum tabs the reflectors mount to 90º and putting Cateye TL-LD500 taillights on each rear corner. The vertical pieces of PVC pipe, on the rear of the trailer, are for carrying fishing rods. The horizontal pieces are so I don't have to tie down things that fit on the trailer without hanging over, i.e. cooler, CamelBak, etc, and to prop up the golf bag to keep it from dragging on the road. The PVC is just zip-tied on. The rubber bungees are for tying things down, and to help the zip-ties hold the PVC in place.:)

Nice... though that seatpost thingy with a pullcart is also cool, this has the advantage of keeping low overall width, and so its easier to ride on high traffic roads.

I've played with nothing but a 6-iron and my score didn't suffer much. Well, not much more than usual.

If the OP has some money and wants to do this on a regular basis, I think he should buy a Surly Big Dummy or add an Xtracycle rear extension to one of his bikes. The trailer isn't a bad idea either. I'd choose a single wheel model.
