I'm planning on riding to Canmore from Calgary (sunnyside) this friday (as long as the weather holds out). Has anyone here done it? Should I take the trans canada, or the 1a, what about getting out of town, etc., etc.,. Any experience and advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I've done this ride on the Trans Canada Highway. The shoulder gets pretty small to virtually non-existant after a while on the 1a. However, the 1a isn't as busy of a road and is more scenic IMO.
As for getting out of town from Sunnyside, you can take the Bow River bike path all the way to Bowness. Then hop onto the Trans Canada at Stoney Trail. If you decide on 1a, take Stoney Trail north to Crowchild Trail / 1a.
Have a great ride.

Hi,
I rode out Via the 1A on Tuesday, The highway was pretty clean until the 30km unshouldered stretch behind the Morley reserve which was pretty crappy, between gravel and the worsening conditon of the road it really sucked, - maybe the headwind clouded my opinion !!- That section has been getting so rough over the last 5 or 6 years it's unreal. I really wish the Morley nation would spend some cash and clean it up.
The section from the 1X and Canmore was fine as always.
I rode home on the #1 yesterday it was clean pretty much the whole way, there was even cleaning equipment out at some of the overpass intersections.
have fun
