looking for solid advice

I am trying to find some info on a good solid hybrid or mountain bike for a friend who is very heavyset, yet wants to start riding, especially along the roads in coastal ct. I offered him use of an old bridgestone mb5 mountainbike i had, but he found it hard/uncomfortable riding in what he called a "crouched position"
does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on a solid, but not terrible expensive bike for a male who is probably 300lbs, but in decent shape, i'm kind of lost as to where to steer him. thanks, napatree

Try a Trek 750. I've had mine for 10 years. It's upright, sturdy, reliable and comfortable. I love it.
