Fifty Plus (50+) - father-son activity

Although both of my sons have done some bicycling while growing up, it has mainly taken the form of casually cruising around the streets on mountain bikes. However, my elder son has started doing nighttime mountain bike tours of the "woods" on the UCSD campus with one club, and he has now taken two Saturday morning road rides with the San Diego Bicycle Club on the Peugeot PKN-10 road bike I recently gave him to try out, since it has always been 2+cm too tall for me. He has even invited me to join him on the SDBC rides, which I'll definitely try when I am not teaching my all day Saturday class at UCSD Extension. (It's always fun to show up on a bike that is older than many of the riders.)

Now I just have to work on son #2, who at 18 is far more interested in cars, specifically Audis, than in bicycles.

Well, if he's interested in Audi's he already shown some characteristics that will be helpful: Patience, tolerance, respect for engneering, things that are outside the norm, etc. I'd rejoice in the oldest's sons interests and just enjoy the second son for who he is. I say this, because it mirrors my own family dynamics, with the exception that the younger son has a passion for the technical aspects of theatre.

His 1996 Audi A4 and his mother's 2001 VW Passat wagon (same platform) are already driving ME there, and now he wonders why I show no enthusiasm whatsoever for acquiring a 2000 S4 with 30 valves and two turbos. Actually, they really are great cars to drive, with the added plus of simple, clean, timeless Bauhaus-enspired styling, but they are not cheap cars to own.

Take heart, John E. My 20 year old went automotive a few years ago but the cost of pouring premium into his turbo beast pushed him to buy a bike to commute to school and to his part time job. In turn, he began trail riding (road's too tame I guess) and loves it. Tonight we're working on his thrashed brakes together. Hehe....a father/son evening for me coupled to safer braking for him. I win both ways !!

Wait until he blows up a tranny on the Audi. He'll check the price and hop right on that bike. But if you buy me an S4, I'll ride with you whenever you want.
