Stinky Shorts.

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Stinky Shorts.

Yep, the title says it all. Coming from someone who barely ever sweats, biking is both a relief and a bit of a pain. When I get home from a ride, my girlfriend looks at me like I just invaded a skunk's personal space. I immediately head for the showers, but still...

After getting a wool jersey or three, the smell went down an order of magnitude. This works up to about 90deg, but above that I prefer a thinner jersey. To that end I found a nice assos jersey on ebay which is definitely the best one I own, as far as the stench is concerned at least. It runs about 75% less than the rest of my jerseys.

That made me wonder, are there any shorts that stink less?

Do assos shorts use a super funk remover lining that converts the normal sweat stink to the scent of lilac and roses? If so, I don't want that pair, already have enough lilac and rose scented stuff around the house

Shower before and after does not affect the smell. Yes, I wash them.

I'm not a dirty bastard y'all! I seem to just produce a sweat that combines with synthetic fabrics poorly. Like I said, my wool stuff has very very little, if any, scent. Just the synthetics.

Do you use fabric softener? If so, don't.

Not from me, I'm not assos rich. My money all went into my custom shoes. The jersey I purchased was labled poorly on ebay and I paid a total of 30 dollars delivered, NWT

If someone else has comfortable and non-stinky bibshorts, I would be super happy! I just don't know who, and want recommendations.

No fabric softener. Tried tide detergent and this other stuff that I cant remember the name of, in a blue bottle. I always go for unscented.

They have a tendency to make synthetic fabrics in general retain odor.

If you don't already, do this:
Clean up the kay-rotch before a ride. Only wear shorts or bibs once between washing. Remove immediately upon returning from a ride. If they don't go into the wash right away then hang and air dry in a well ventilated space. I use Woolite or similar detergent and wash on the delicate setting and then immediately remove and air dry.
This keeps the stink away.

Ok....

Am the old guy here that does not go around smelling his shorts, jerseys, gloves, etc.....

During the hot and humid summers, in Ontario, I'm putting in around 350km's a week on the bike. I sweat and stink as bad as the rest. I simply get home strip down, hang sweaty clothing to dry and then shower. My wife rides the same as me so we have twice the stuff. Our basement, which houses the bike stuff, never smells like a gym. We wear our stuff once and dry it after use and then wash it.

The only things that do get funky are the gloves and jackets and that's simply because they aren't washed enough...

Sweat

Funkiness is good. It means you worked!!

But if your bike clothes retain odors even after washing (and air drying) you should use this.

It really works.
