I'm having a terrible time getting rid of a creaking in my BB. I've tightened the cranks, pedals, and isolated just about every source of the noise I can. The BB does not creak when I use my old Shimano BB with Ritchey Crank.


Here is what I have:
Titanium Independent Fabrications ClubRacer
Phil BB with Specialities TA Carmina (double) cranks.

The mechanic at my LBS who built the bike coated the BB and mounting rings with a copper colored anti-seize. He was concerned with the potential of the ti and BB seizing together. Is the anti-seize a good idea?

When doing some maintenance I downloaded the install instructions for the BB and note you have a special thread compound. I do not believe the mechanic had this with my BB as they had the BB from old stock. I know that he glopped on the anti-seize liberally.

Is the Ti of my frame and the BB incompatible?

What is the proper procedure for installing the BB? Will the PW thread compound help eliminate the creak?

Which compound should I order if this will help - the BB Lock Ring Retaining Compound or another?

Anythoughts from the BF membership?

I like wraping the threads with a couple of layers of the teflon tape used by plumbers. This has been very successful in keeping the bb's quiet on my Ti frame Litespeeds.

Also, are the cups torqued adequately?

I'll check how tight they are when I get the BB tool I ordered.
I've read the trick about teflon tape.

Are you using a stainless steel ring? I've heard that aluminum can seize in a Ti frame.

Not sure what type of BB you're using here (external or internal bearings), probably because I can't afford Phil. If it's internal bearing, I've had trouble with the interface between the NDS cup and the BB cartridge, cured either with lots of grease or wraps of Teflon tape.

there are 2 threaded stainless rings that center the unit in the BB shell.


update: last night i rode a century. temp was 57 to start, 41 when i returned home. somewhere in the last hour or two the creaking stopped, as the temp dropped! i'll have to check again today - buy i bet she creaks in the warmer temps.
