Fifty Plus (50+) - I'm Shaving My Legs Tonight

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

are you a woman? haha if your a man... ok just do it the same way you do your face i guess. if youre a woman, you should have shaved at a younger age, where you could have asked your parents for advice. alot of people are afraid to shave, i would say i was afraid to shave for the first time because you always see people shaving before they go on a date and they cut themselves and end up with little tissues on their face. its not really like that but its stupid to show that in a movie. it kinda puts fear in young boys. i never cut my face when i shave.

Please. Just why would a 50+er want to do that?
Of course, it could give you an extra optical inch if you do it correctly.
Here is a serious response...http://www.gillettevenus.com/us/. Make sure the sound on the computer is on to get the full effect:rolleyes: . Do not use a man's face razor! It will be a bloodbath:eek: . Good luck.

Lots of shaving cream and a lady's razor:) Those men's razors can be hazardous on the shin area - they have a tendency to take out little chunks of skin:eek:
If you have an electric razor, or better yet an electric hair trimmer, use that on your legs first to knock down the tall stuff.
Then, use plenty of "gel" lather (it stays on better than the Gillette Foamy style of shave cream).
Take your time, and try to make longer smooth strokes.
You'll probably knick yourself until you get the hang of it.
Finally, have some lotion or skin care stuff ready to put on your legs to reduce itchiness.
Be prepared to feel a bit "weird" at first...pants feel different, crawling into bed feels different, going out in public with shorts feels *really* different.
The good news is, it's a "serious cyclist" tribal ritual, and many women find it a turn on (YMMV).

Cuz you should try everything once, except incest and folk dancing.
For some reason I keep seeing the image of blood swirling with water down the bathtub drain. You know? Like in Hitchcock's "Psycho".

Me too. Which is why I decided the better part of valor was to drink a beer tonight and buy a women's specific razor and lots of shaving goop--tomorrow.

I've read that committed cyclists prefer to pull the hairs out, thereby reducing any last remaining drag caused by stubborn stubble.
I bet a roll of duct tape would do the trick just fine and you will not have to worry about nicks......
I'm really surprised noone has asked for pics.......
So here I was out in the middle of BFE and I ride thru a group of bees minding their own business and a couple got caught in my heretofore untouched leg hairs. They promptly stung the crap out of me, all the while trying to remember if I was allergic to bee stings.
Ever since, start of the year, season sheer the wool down to the nubbins....

Yep...it also makes it a lot easier to put on sunscreen, makes your legs look more muscular, and (perhaps I've already mentioned this) women dig it - at least, fit women seem to dig it (and those are the only ones that interest me! ;)).

He's not doing it to be faster.
He is doing it in the name of scientific research. Research into the unsubstantiated claims of the "fringe benefits" of having smooth legs.
Should his research bear (or is that bare?) fruit, several of us may be shaving this summer.

did this myself for the first time about a month ago. Just soap and a bic razor...nary a nick or cut. For me, it's the ease of sunscreen application. At my age, I doubt any chicks will find it sexy.

Excellent advice. And don't forget lotion -- dry skin on legs is nasty.

I feel goofy enough in shorts with tan lines mid thigh, shaving would be too much. My 13yo daughter would have a heart attack she already tells me go hide when I come out in my bibs.

I think you should just shave some cool designs instead doing the full monty thing. Maybe your Avatar, or some neat bike thing. Might start a trend.

Don't use a cheap disposable razor. Use a Mach3 or better. I've been shaving my legs since 2001 and the disposables cut more skin than hair.
If you read through the Road Cycling forum you'll see the top 5 (or 6 or 7 or .....) reasons for shaving.
Me -- I do it for the looks, feel, massage benefits, sunscreen and leg hair don't mix, and to show off those awesome muscles. :D
Let's be honest. Don't you think leg hair is repulsive?

It just might be that body hair is a little like a weed. If you get rid of it in one place, it's just going to appear somewhere else.
Can explain again why you are doing this? It will make you faster? You will heal easier if you get an ouchie on your leg? You will look better in your bike shorts?

make sure you hack off most of the hair first with an electric trimmer. get in the dry tub and make a big pile and then throw it out. then use a razor to get off what's left while taking a shower. i don't use women's razors, i use cheapo disposals and a little soap and i don't get hacked up. lotion up after.

Resist all temptations or suggestions for a bikini wax to go along with your shaved legs.
It just might be that body hair is a little like a weed. If you get rid of it in one place, it's just going to appear somewhere else.
If selective shaving of one part of the body woud stimulate hair growth somewhere else, for instance, on the top of a man's head, this thread would become extremely valuable.:D

I like to ride with the big dogs, and I race some too. In that venue, it's generally (though not universally) considered a "tribal ritual"...if you want to be part of the tribe, you shave.
I also consider it a "rite of spring" - I shave after my first 1000 miles of the year, or after the first day of spring, whichever comes first.
Finally, it's become part of my "cyclist" persona...we're already considered somewhat odd because we're skinny and wear colorful lycra while we play in traffic. So shaving's just another piece of the persona...one that I'm comfortable with (plus, fit women dig it - I may have mentioned that above ;)).

The real question is, why can shaving be so disappointing? Because shaving literally slices off the ends of your leg hair, it can leave a sharp edge behind. When those cut edges emerge, you can feel that rough, stubbly sensation as you run your hands over your skin. Not to mention how it feels to someone else! And, no matter how many blades you have, the stubble will always emerge. Add the possibility of nicks, cuts and razor bumps to the equation - Ouch! That's why REAL MEN use Nair http://www.naircare.com/

Just go to a salon and have them wax it off.Go for the toe nail polishing, its usually free with the hair removal.Any questions, just tell them you have a leading role in a local production of,"La Cage au Follies."
