Classic & Vintage - Campagnolo Nuovo Record pulley jockey wheel replacement and compatibility?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So, what's cross-compatible? There seem to be a few viable options:

1) Soma reproductions. Not cheap, not "correct" in the slightest. Ugh.

2) Parts-bin Shimanos. Ugh again. Will allegedly work in a pinch, but how can I tell?

3) Cannibalizing another complete Campagnolo derailleur from eBay. They seem to go for cheaper than pulleys alone. Will *all* Campagnolo bits work, or should I avoid certain models?

4) New 8, 9, or 10-speed pulleys from eBay. Same deal as above.

I don't mind running newer parts on a vintage bike - it's a rider's rig, not a wall hanging - but I really don't like the aesthetics of non-Campag bits. Tried the search option, and this thread seemed pretty non-definitive: http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=114750&highlight=pulley

Thanks for your advice!

nick?

The shimano lower pulleys from the 8 speed and other 80s derailleurs are the best match for size and shape. Do not get the newer ones that say narrow on them. Maybe the upper pulleys from 8 speed shimano pulley will probably works too but you will be able to see you have non-campy in there. If you are fussy why not sand off the "shimano" from the pulleys?

Mr. Bier, I presume? I was just e-mailing you right now. =-)

I found a random Shimano pulley in one of my bins. Not sure if it's upper or lower-specific. The upper jockey wheel is the one that's worn on the NR derailleur, presumably from being jammed up against the 30-tooth cog out back.

30 tooth with a nuovo record!? you must have long drop-outs. I emailed you back last week saying I had to pulleys you could have.

I have several NR that have Suntour pulleys in them. Don't know price or what you think of those old ones but they work.

do you know what derailleur the pulleys are from? My 1st gen cyclone and other lower end suntour derailleurs all have a larger bolt size than the record pulley.

Shimano works. I've used them to save the original pulley wheels and have no complaints.

No, they were in there when I acquired the derailleurs.

i think upgrading your NR/SR with superbe pro sealed bearing pulleys was sort of a common upgrade back in the day

C-record pulleys work fine and they are an upgrade as they have bearings vs bushings. Only tip off that they are not NOS is they are grey vs black.

I have used the C-Record pulleys. Seems you can find them pretty cheap and they work good, but are gray, if that is a concern.

victory and triomphe work 2, you can probably buy a used one fore under $10 on ebay. I put white victory pulleys in my super record anyway to make it look like the last gen, which did have white pulleys, as I am running cobalto brakes and white cable housing with white lettering.

I am going to resurrect this thread, as I also have a Nuovo Record 79 with pulley & jockey wheels that are gone which I am thinking of putting back in action.

All I have are Suntour V-GT Luxe and Suntour Accushift 4030 to scavange wheels from.

I guess I ought to consider if the Accushift will be less of a problem to adjust to work correctly or if I should just look for Shimano wheels at my co-op sometime.

Side Note: Did the Nuovo Record come with a barrel adjuster or cable stop?

No barrel Adjuster, You would think campy would have thought of that. Also my LBS has sealed bearing pulley wheel sets for $25.00. I use them on all my Super Record RD's. Should work fine with NR. They have them in black too.

Back in the day, NR pulleys were often replaced with Suntour.

I've never even noticed the lack of a barrel adjuster. It's friction after all; it's just not that finicky.

What about the VO ones? Wrong tooth number?

Yeah, needs 10 instead of 11.

I will try swapping with Suntour and let you guys know how it went.
