Are all 8/9 hubs suited for a 10 spd cassette if you use a spacer?
I tried to mover a Shimano 10 spd cassette and spacer from a 9 speed hub (Cannondale Earth hub and cassette was working correctly) over to a Shimano 600 hub that came from an 8 speed bike. Spacing is terrible and I cannot get rear derailure adjusted to work with this setup. The cassette sits too far inboard and the first time I ran thru the gears, the chain came off the outboard end of the cassette and it is impossible to shift into the cassette big ring no matter how much I adjust the derailure. I can fix the outboard problem but I cannot fix the inboard big ring problem. It acts like the cassetts needs an additional or thicker spacer to move the cassette a little bit more outboard to get the cassette into proper position to allow alighnment with the deraileur.
What am I doing wrong?
Seems like it should work. Are you sure the first position cog aligned correctly with the splines in the hub?
Is the spacer at the back of the cassette?
Some MAVIC hubs require an additional thicker spacer but I would think that the Shimano 600 8-speed hub would be the same as a 9-speed hub.

Spacer is in the back of the cassette and all cogs are aligned with splines.
The main reason I asked about the thickness of the spacer is that it looked very thin. I did not mic it for thickness. Are all shims the same thickness are do they vary by different mfg hubs?

Yup, it is one very thin spacer (not sure of the exact spec). 10 speed cassette should work on 8/9, though goinf the other way (9 to 10) doesn't always work due to some 10 speed specific hubs with different spline depth. You could try adding a spacer. I know that many Mavic hubs require a thick spacer for 9 speed and then you use that spacer in conjunction with the thinner spacer to go to 10 speed. Could be something like that going on. I'd hit up your LBS and see if they have a few spacers laying around you could slap on to experiment with.

I believe the spacer provided with Shimano 10-speed cassettes is 1 mm (0.04") thick.

My LBS suggested that the amount of dish could be the culprit. Apparently the wheel I tried to install the 10 speed cassette had been dished to fit the original 8 speed cassette. As a result, the old 8 speed hub was setting my cassette about .08" further inboard than the hub my 10 speed cassette came from. That .08" was too much for my RD to overcome. I don't know if that .08" difference was driven by the dish or not but the difference was definitely there. I don't know the history of this wheel so I don't know if the setup was driven by 8 speed dish or some bad wheel build in the past. Either way, I don't plan to mess whith this wheel any more.
BTW...the shim measured .03"

Maybe I am thinking of this all wrong, and it wouldn't be the first time, but dish would have nothing to do with this. Changing the dish would only change where the rim aligned between the seat stays. Dish has nothing to do where the cassette sits on the hub. If you took a washer off one side of the axle and added it to the other side and changed the alignment of the hub in the frame then you would have to redish the wheel for it to sit evenly between the seat stays. But dish alone, as far as I can see, won't have anything to do with what you are describing.

Ray...that was my thinking also. However, I have confirmed my measurements. If it is not the dish, there must be something "different" about this hub. It is a Shimano 600 probably from the mid/late 90's and it was being used on an 8 speed bike. It is possible that someone built it up wrong but at this point, I no longer care. It was a junker and I was just going to use it as an interim setup while I was getting some wheels built.
I think I will tear the hub apart and see if there is anything odd about how it was assembled.
