I run a fixed on the streets, and there is an out door velodrome(sp?), i some times go there there just to do a few laps, but i find 69 gear inches to be way to low. The hub is a fixed/free hub.

I got a 15t cog to try a harder gear (faster).

I have a front brake, so would it ok to just screw on the 15t cog and do some laps with out a lock ring on the free side?

Thanks its a surly cog if that matters.

well if you get it on nice and tight then it will be fine...since you don't skid/skip/hop on the track...

you'll be fine...
my campy track hub doesn't have any threadng for a lockring and i've been riding/racing it on the track for over ten years and never had a problem

I've never used a lockring on the track-- just torque the cog on hard. I know a lot of people who don't use lockrings.

If you're backpedaling hard enough to unscrew it you've already got much bigger problems.

On the street I highly recommend a lockring though.
