Something important I learned from my weightlifting days is the importance of consuming proteins post-workout. Well today, after my workout was finished, my Mom suggested I drink a glass of SOY milk. Soy milk, of course, contains soy, and soy is a way to get protein for the vegetarians and vegans out there. I was wondering, would soy milk be a good substitute for protein bars or powder mixed with water? I would honestly prefer the milk for the taste.

You could drink soy milk, though it doesn't have a very high amount of protein. I'd recommend mixing in some soy protein, which you can find pretty cheap at GNC and such places. I drink soy milk with it, and it's pretty darn good.

The above link takes you to an article that touts the benefits of Skim milk over Soy anything. I am not a nutritionist nor do I claim to be perfect (still have about 40lbs to lose myself) however I think any time you can get something from a natural source vice overly processed items/powders/bars I would favor that.

I do think powders/bars/gels etc... have their place, but I've pretty much sworn off of supplements and decided to go the all natural way.

NOTE: for all those with fingers on triggers I do understand that Skim milk is processed to remove fat.

Indeed, you are on thinner ice than that even... as there is very little "natural" left in the dairy industry. In trying to cut my dairy intake, I switched to Soy milk for a short time (I only needed it for cereal). It was okay, and the negatives to soy seemed trivial in comparison to the mountains of bad mojo in the dairy industry. But I've since managed to cut out soy milk as well.

(Check the last paragraph of that article: "study was funded by the National Dairy Council." I'm just sayin'. :) )

Soy milk in moderation is fine. Look into the light version if you're so inclined.

as a vegan (+fish) i've been trying to cut back on soy milk because i probably end up consuming way too much soy, and i really dont consume all that much since i try to avoid processed foods as much as possible. i've been drinking almond milk in my cereal recently instead and like it, but it's much thinner than soy milk. i also use rice protein powder instead of soy. i don't know how serious all of the potential problems with consuming to much soy are, but i generally try not to consume too much of any one thing. it's all about balance y'know.

oh, and odwalla makes a few pretty tasty soy protein drinks that i think have 21g of protein. check those out for after workout stuff in you're in a pickle.
