This is WAY incorrect. I have a mk1 Scirocco(Same size tire well as the Rabbit) If you put a 55 gal tank, the dia of the tire well, in the Rabbit it would touch the roof(At the least). You could maybe fit a ten or twelve gallon cell in the well and there would be no room for a spare.
Heh, whoops, forgot to divide by 4 w/ cylinder area. Yup, there's ~12gallons of space there, maybe 7-8 gallons w/ a donut. I suppose towing a couple drums would be the easiest way to extend range. Although, ~65mpg@55mph should be doable, which is ~1200 miles right there. 30 gallons worth of storage should increase range to ~3000 miles with a ~200-300lb weight penalty, or more if a trailer is used to haul stuff too.

PlantDrive sells tanks (for their veggie systems, though - but it's the diesel tank, so there's no reason it couldn't be used in a car that is run on diesel only, if they would just sell it to people running diesel only) that fit in the spare tire on the newer VWs that have full size spares, and IIRC, they're about 6 gallons
