Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So, with Breathless Agony about a week away, I was thinking I need to do some distance and some climing this weekend. I created a route that's 98.5 miles and has about 8,000 feet of climbing in it through the OC's best hills so needless to say, this is not a social ride, there's a lot of climbing. You can view the route on RouteSlips.com here:
http://www.routeslips.com/show/index/143
It starts near back bay on Eastbluff Dr and Back Bay Dr. Here's a list of the hill you get to enjoy :D
Newport Coast (twice)
850 Ft avg grade: 7%
Park Ave to Alta Laguan Park, Laguna Beach
1000 Ft avg grade: 12% ( there's a lot that is 14%-16%)
Crown Valley/Pacific Island
900ft avg grade: 8~9%
Felipe Rd/Oso Pkwy/Antonio Pkwy
1100 ft avg grade: 5%
Trabuco Canyon
500ft avg grade: 6%
Ridgeline Rd
350ft avg grade: 9%
Modjeska Grade
400ft avg grade: 11%
Plan on assembling at 7:00am and rolling @ 7:30am and get most of the climbing done before it gets to warm.
I know this is short notice so there won't be any SAG.
Hope to see some of you Breathless riders there
:D
UPDATED:
If some of you want to do the ride but aren't thrilled with all the hills, I can show you how to bypass a few of them and skip the steepest ones if you want.
Let me know.
Mike
Sounds interesting. If by chance you decide to do this on a Sunday instead, let me know.

Good route - I woudn't have thought Newport Coast was that steep...
NCD includes Vista Ridge/Ridge Park....
I'll be there!

Maddmike, why don't you just come out to Diamond Bar and climb East Fork and Baldy with us.

There will be less traffic lights and more people to ride with. Although your route sounds like a good weekday ride for me. I will do it some time soon. Thanks for the route so close to home.
Jon
Have fun, Mike. We'll ride together some other time.

I'll likely show up for this one. But I have limited time, so I may just go as far as Laguna before heading home...
Wow! This was a challenging ride and for the first time ever I had to walk up a hill instead of riding up it.
Granted, that hill was 3rd Street in Laguna Beach and it appears to be about 25%.
Otherwise, Park Ave to Alta Laguna was incredibly painful as it averaged 16-17% and all of the other main hills were 9-12% (Vista Ridge, Pacific Island Drive, Ridgeline, Modjeska) which culminated in Mike and I skipping the last trip up NPC.
86.46 miles
6:07 ride time
7:50 total time
7046 feet of gain

Good grief, this was tough. And we only did a third of it today. And I only did 4/5 of the third.

If YOU had to walk up it, I would have rolled backwards down it and slid out on my stomach. :p :D That sounds like a doosie of a ride! Did Tiff go? We all missed her yesterday...:o

Oh I'm glad I opted not to head out on this ride! :p
m.e., I just did a local 46 mile ride down to Laguna and back with a couple of detours. Off now to catch up on the Santa Barbara thread. :)

Yeah, this was a tough ride. Extort is right, Park Ave in Laguna is insanley steep, I can't believe he made it up all the way with a standard crank and 25 in the rear. I'm sooo glad I have a compact crank with a 26 in the rear. I liked the route but, the weather was kinda of weird. Near the coast it was overcast and foggy, nice for cycling. Once we went inland and got back to Trabuco Canyon it was hot. That made Ridgeline and Modjeska complete bears to ride. We bailed on the last climb up Newport Coast/Ride Route which was fine with me. We still did 86 miles and 6700 feet I think, I had isuses with my garmin.
Extort and I talked about the route and we might be able to keep it closer to the coast and still keep the elevation the same. He reminded me of some hills that I missed. Probably re-think this and do it again some time.

I'm glad you called Park insanely steep, or I'd feel even worse about myself.

Yeah, it's steep AND long... best of both words.
