I picked up a 1965 Hercules today for $35. It is very clean. The seller told me he brought it on eBay from Arizona and that it had been in storage for a very long time. Everything seems to be original including the tires and John Bull brake shoes. After a little adjusting, the AW hub is back in workng order. I already raised the saddle about 6". I somehow managed to ride 7 miles home in under an hour through heavy traffic with the seat resting on the frame all the while stuck in first gear.

Some questions for the experts:

The kickstand was taken off and I would like to put one back on. What kind should I be looking for that is appropriate?

According to the chainguard, this is an AMF Hercules. Were all post-Raleigh buyout, post-1960 Herculi distributed by AMF in the US? How were these different from the non-AMF models?

Is there anything else missing that I can look out for?

Here it is as I recieved it.

My Dad has a Hercules that looks like that. His has been repainted, so there aren't any decals, but the chain guard is the same shape and the seat is similar. His bike has a Hercules rear hub, which indicates that it was built before the Raleigh takeover in 1958.
I don't know if Hercules sold bikes other than to AMF, but I know that not all AMF's wer Hercules. I have an AMF from 1972 that was made in Austria, probably by Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Later AMFs were made in the USA by Huffy or Murray.

There's a blast from the past! I added a 14-16-18-20 Cyclo cog cluster, a Campag. Gran Sport derailleur, drop bars, road pedals with clips, and a tensioned leather Ideale saddle, and made a nice commuter out of mine. I also substituted a 3-bolt crank with a 40T ring to give me a near-ideal 40-to-100 inch gear range.

I rode it to and from work today. There is a hump in the rear tire near the valve stem which I think is from the incredibly thick, thorn proof tubes it has. The rear fender is also loose at the chainstay bridge which made for a very loud commute. I loved it! Those will all get repaired, though.

My uncle bought one of these new waaaay back in 1966-67. Later, after he got into cars, my mother rode it well into the mid-70's before it was stolen.

That Hercules looks like it really has some character. Nice score :)

Here'a '66 AMF Herc that I picked up on CL a few months ago. It'll go to brother as a re-creation of his childhood bike.

An ESGE/Pletscher alloy kickstand would be appropriate, I think.
