They can stop working correctly if you run into a tree. I bet if you never crashed, a decent front der. would work for a long time.

My wife just brought home an old Peugeot. One side of the front derailleur is practically worne through be the chain. It appears that the person who had the bike before did know what he is doing judging by the upgrades, however, he/she should have heard the chain suffering and rubbing...

If the der is wiggling a bit and it is a nicer one check the pivots. The nicer ones have small pivot bolts that do loosen and let it appear worn out.

I've seen a few that need replacin' cuz they wuz all used up..But not many. Usually it's the pivots.

When new, my Ultegra Fr derailleur used to work its pivot bolt loose...the one with the allen key head. It would get sloppy and you could see the rear facing bolt head turn when the derailleur moved. I just keep an eye on it and nip it up if necessary, tho it hasn't come loose for a while. I don't recall using locktite on it.

I would think that much of the wear that a front derailleur accumulates is due to improper installation/adjustment/use. I would think that a well-built front derailleur would last a long time when properly adjusted and cared for. I have seen a few go because of pivot problems caused by use and abuse over time.
