Folding Bikes - Stolen bikes - UK figures

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Sad. Will doubtless contribute to increased folder interest though........
Very depressing figures. I've had a few bikes stolen in the past and its a real kick in the teeth. So now, I always try and keep my folder inside or with me.

Every 71 seconds is incredible. I suspect in 10 years, half a million bicycles will be stolen in central London alone.
I think part of the problem is the fact that many people like to park bicyles on bike racks with inexpensive locks. If you're going to use a bike rack, the locks should weight nearly 25 lbs or more! The Kryptonite New York 3000 or Chain is the only lock I would use if locking the bike outside for significant amount of time.
You would think Brompton should use this as a marketing ploy since folders are rarely locked on bike racks. If you see stolen Bromptons for sale inexpensively, it's usually those that were locked outside a train station or bike rack.

It's a good idea to take your folder inside with you, but even that isn't a guarantee against theft. The folding society (http://www.foldsoc.co.uk/) home page published this link (http://tinyurl.com/yro62g) to a story about robbers taking Bromptons from their owners by force.

Thank you for posting the article, DaFriMon. One of the reasons I switched to folders is the sad occurance in my mother's family. It happend near my old high school a few years back. My mother's distant relation was riding a old bike. Some people decided to take it by force. He had his bashed in with a baseball bat. He told his mother that a man told him, "Thank you for the bike" as he took it away in a truck. My mother told me he is permamently disabled and has periodic fits (severe jerking). This could happen anywhere, not just the UK.

Quite sad.
Bromptons are becoming an expensive utility bike and the crooks know this. A lot of folders are now priced too high making you a target for criminals thus defeating the purpose of utility cycling.
