Foo - I'm Not taking the JOB!!! :(

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I decided not to take the job. I met with the employer this morning and they are offering me WAY LESS then what I currently make now.
After discussing it with my boyfriend and his parents (I needed help) we all agreed that it wouldn't be the best move for me.

Did they offer any extra benefits compared to what have now?

You should at least counteroffer. I did this, and netted a few thousand more per year, with a guaranteed six-month review that would result in a mid-year increase in pay if I were performing to expectation. Got that, too. And, I got the year-end salary increase as well. Never hurts to counteroffer.
And PC2 is right. Sometimes, it's about the whole compensation package vs just the salary. Which company offers a better overall salary, retirement account, health insurance, medical reimbursement account, company stock, vacation, leave, etc? Be sure you're comparing all of these. The salary can come back up over time, so if the other benefits are better with the new job, it might still be the one to take....

No. My current employer pays for Health, I have a 401k, good vacation. So no nothing that would set them over the top!!!

That's too bad. You'd think big oil and gas would be more generous.

VegaVixen I did consider all these things. The crazy thing is in the meeting she (The President) stated that she is offering $5,000.00 more then what the original salary was going to be. I was shocked to say the less. We're talking a $15,000.00 DIFFERENCE!!

Sounds like you made the right decision. Starting over again isn't any fun
Ugh - I hate when they play the whole, "We're offering you more than what we normally would, you should be thrilled to work for $15k less to be here" card :(
Too bad - but screw them and enjoy your vacation!!
wow, it's been a roller coaster for you!
I Know!! Thank God I leave for Paris tomorrow. :)

it's a little BS to get blindsided like this. Didn't you know going in what the position was going to pay? --Didn't they mention it at all?
Sucks. I'm sorry.
Get to Paris and clear your head and you'll come back to something perfect. It'll happen :)

Snowy, sorry to hear it fall out like that. One thing you can do is research what your position pays - then you can contact them and basically tell them that if they want anyone good - they are going to have to pay.
And if you are getting 15K more than the job normally pays...
I told the President in my first interview what I make yearly. She actually asked me, I thought that for sure they would offer me what I currently make or MORE?? So I'm quite disappointed. :(

That's usually how it works, interviews don't go further if the money isn't going to match up. I've had initial phone screens that ended 5 minutes into the conversation for that very reason. Ugh. Well it works out -- no company is worth working for that plays that kind of bait-n-switch. F-- em and move on.

Thats my plan. I have to call her this afternoon and let her know my answer.
Get used to it. I turn down job offers on a monthly bassis. They always want the best but they seem to have an unrealistic expectation of how much the best will cost.
Or to put it in biking terms: You won't get a brand new carbon fibre roadie for $50. Be realistic.

Get thee to Paris my darlin - relax, see the sights, have fun and don't think about any of this stuff. When you come back I'm sure things will work out better for you. GO HAVE SOME FUN! :D

Au contraire... please DO forget us. At least for the week. You're in Paris... on vacation... leave all your normal, mundane stuff behind and don't think about it once!

If the company thinks it can jerk you around like that, its not a place you would want to work, even if they were to accept a counteroffer. Unless the amount they offered was a mistake, cause that can happen. One of my senior coworkers never received a raise she was supposed to get becuase HR/payroll screwed up. Our boss knew she was getting a raise, but he never actually discussed it with her so it went undiscovered for a few months. Really, I'd follow up on it, maybe even talk to the president cause the amount may have been changed down the line by accident.

sorry, haven't read thread yet, but here's a thought - what was the difference in the jobs themselves?
My best job prospect was with the best manager I've ever known in a small company with low wages.
My current job pays a lot of money and is a complete waste of my time (2 more months...)
In my experience, dynamic small companies are the best to work for, because you get so much different stuff to do.

Go to Angelique on the Rue de Rivoli. Have the chocolat africain. Don't eat anything beforehand.
Oh, you're probably already there. Well, enjoy

There is a Jewish bakery in the Marais that is fan-freaking-tastic. *drools*
Good decision Snowy, no reason to take such a cut, it takes to long to make it back.
Here's my $.25 advice: Stay put in your job, finish the degree (see if present employer will pay part are all), then start looking again. I think the degree will make a huge difference for you.
You owe me a quarter:D
snowy, I'm so sorry to hear the news. the lost one great person to work for them. you'll find your job. keep your chin up..it'll pop up when you least expect it. *hug*

I Know!! Thank God I leave for Paris tomorrow. :)
If you've never been (or even if you have), do yourself a favor. Take the RER from the airport I'm assuming CDG), connect to the Metro (line 4) and get off at Saint-Michel. As you rise up the steps to the street, look over across the street at Place Saint-Michel and just take a deep breath. And then ask yourself. "isn't this a place I could live forever?" My bet is the answer will be yes, but check it out. It was the first sight I saw of Paris on my first visit years ago, and wow- what a start.
Bon voyage (et bon appétit)!!

Snowy, I'm curious. For her to offer you $15000 less than your current position, already knowing what you make, she must have had a reason to think that you would accept the position. Other than your enthusiasm during the interview, did you give her any reason to think you're desperate for a new job. If so, you may want to leave this out in the next interview.

Remember to tell everyone what jerks the management at that company are. They deserve to have their reputation sullied a bit.

Yeah it happens Snowy....
I've turned down a few offers myself the past few months...mostly stemming from operational issues....I make it a point to not work for a company that runs things just like the company I'm dissatisfied with (I make it a point to really dig into the questions during the interview, as I tell them...they get to do a Q&A "test drive" of me, and I should be able to get a Q&A "test drive" of them :) ). If they are unwilling to do that, or are obviously BSing me, I go elsewhere.....life is too short to have to deal with a dishonest management.
Think of it this way, $15k is HUGE pay (that's almost half of what I make right now!).....if they underpay by that much, they had better offer a company Jaguar, and some hardcore benefits.
