I will spend the weekend working so I took today(friday) off and went for a longish solo ride. Beautiful weather, very warm for the season. After a long bleak winter the colours are coming back, spring is just so wonderful on a day like this. I rode around the third largest lake in Norway, just north of Oslo. I don't use a computer but I have done just about the same ride before and it is around 180 km. My goal for the ride was to stay fresh the whole ride and have a decent amount of energy at the end. I feel just fine typing this now so mission accomplished. This is my third longish ride this season, last weekend I did the first qualifying brevet (200 km) for PBP. I am not doing the PBP but I like the idea of riding together with those who are. And just maybe if I do the 600 km.........
Anyway last saturday turned out rather differently than I had thought. I am not at all a seasoned long distance cyclist and thought the rest of the PBP qualifyers would be a scary bunch. Alas PBP is not a big thing in Norway and only around 20 people started. Hardly any of them had done any long distance riding this winter (difficult here in Norway) so they were not riding fast at all. I ended up in the front with the only really good rider in the field. He was a goldmine of information about Long Distance Cycling and made the ride really great for me. He finished 7. in last years Provence Ultra ( 570 km and 10 000 altitude meters in under 26 hours). For him this was a recovery ride but I had to struggle to do my part of the work in front since nobody else wanted to pull. I hope to see him again next saturday for the 300 km.
This is all your fault Machka (and Kent Peterson's) for writing so well about your PBP experience and about distance cycling in general.;)
