This is an idea I brought up a few months ago, and a moderator even encouraged me, but then I had some second thoughts and haven't gotten back to it. Now that we've had a few more "cyclist killed" threads (:() I guess I'll ask you all what you think.

The basic idea was to have a sticky thread for memorial news and messages only. No discussion of circumstances would be allowed beyond just stating known facts. This would be the place to simply notify the community and send condolences without descending into arguments and hurt feelings over causes and so forth. That would still be allowed elsewhere on the forum, but not on this one thread.

My concern is that one thread doesn't do a good job of showing us when a new incident has happened. Someone wanting to draw attention to an incident is not necessarily going to think of appending to that thread, especially if they are not a regular poster here, they will probably just start a new thread anyway. Then we will be right back where we started. Or even if you are aware of it, if you want someone to really notice something, you might not want to use it anyway, because you know that other people will be less likely to notice it buried on the end of an existing thread. Finally, who of us would have the incentive to read it regularly?

Maybe an entire subforum is the answer.

What do you all think?

Personally, I think it would be a great idea....especially the limitation to expressions of condolences, and the facts known.

A thread like this already exists in the general cycling forum.

Hey, someone copied my idea! Where's my royalties?! ;)

I guess that's what I get for not doing it right away. Maybe when these threads come up we just need to redirect people who aren't interested in argument to that other thread.
