Southeast - Sad news about Hunting Island

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I rode out at Hunting Island State Park, SC for the first time since this past fall. This once beautiful park, and recently renourished beach, isn't looking so good. All of the Red Bay trees are dead from a forgien beetle and fungus invasion that makes the forest look half alive. The State Park Service has installed groins perpendicular to the beach, making beach riding a cyclocross like adventure.
Some of you like to camp there and visit while visiting the Lowcountry. I thought I'd pass on this information to help anyone planning a trip here.

That's a shame, I used to love spending time out there when I was stationed in Beaufort. :(

Not to bump my own thread, but things got much worse. One of the bridges serving the outer islands was severely damaged and subsequently closed to all traffic. Travel time to Hunting Island from Beaufort can be as much as 5 hours for a 21 mile drive. If you've got plans there within the next few months, change them or show up late at night.
We still have our pro bike race tonight downtown.

Dan:
Will be spending week at Harbor Island late July. Not sure if I'll bring bikes but could you recommend any road rides. Also, do you know the time frame for the bridge repair.
Thanks
