Commuting - Post your ride to work!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was googling, and came upon a pretty groovy site. I hadn't seen this one before, and I like it much more than others I've come across.
So, I present to you my route to work. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=902422
Real quick, if you don't want to read the FAQ: Press start recording, and then double click on the map to create a point. Keep in mind that it doesn't do routes based on roads (which is why I love it!!) but rather gmap long/lat points. So when a route curves/turns/bends you may need to make a few extra clicks. This made it great for the forest preserve portion of my ride that no other mapper could handle. :D
I feel like such a fanboy, but it works.

Cool ... here is mine. Sometimes I complain about it, but, from the maps, I think I prefer it to pianomahnn's.

I looked at your route. It seems to go from a point near a canal to another point near a canal. How about a pedal powered boat? And avoid the traffic problems?

heh I thinks that you are lucky to have that much longer ride to work everyday, see the link to understand why.

I frequency have to do a long ride afterward just to satisfy myself. (at least I found a great route last night for a long rides with surprisely good roads)
Wow. Very nice.
How does it calculate calories? I don't think that can be accurate. I was figuring that I was burning around 300 calories each ride. This website says that I'm burning 860 per ride (6.42 miles, with some hills).
I've ridden stationary bikes for the same duration of time and pedaled similarly to as I do for my ride. Then I only burn 400, and I think that's high. This can't be.
Neat site. Mine, roughly:

Yea, that calorie thing can't be right. There is no way I burned 2000 calories on my way to the office today.
I frequency have to do a long ride afterward just to satisfy myself. (at least I found a great route last night for a long rides with surprisely good roads)That's the wonderful thing about my commute. Totals about 35 miles a day, no real need to spend extra time riding. This is the first week I'm actually attempting to ride all 5 days. Horrid weather days I just take public transit. We'll see how the weather holds up...
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=908392
Only 8 km, but on the way home there's 64 m (210 feet) of climbing. Actually a little more since there's a bit of downhill in there as well.
Here is mine: http://www.routeslip.com/routes/34623
I'll have more variations of the same route later. I am getting bored with using the same route over & over again so I am changing it up a little. I'll post those later.

This is the ride in. The ride home takes me down a MUP for about 1.5 miles but lets me avoid a nasty hill.

(14 miles with ~620 ft. elev. gain)

The off road bits are where I climb up a dirt bluff and cross a streambed. Sometimes I go up 29th street instead. I don't really fly across the water, but follow a riverside MUP. If I take roads all the way it is signicantly shorter, but takes a longer time because I have to wait at lots of stop lights, whereas the route I've worked out has three stop lights, five stop signs, and a pedestrian crosswalk.

Wow--I tried this again, being inspired by Chip's elevation post, and found I go up some pretty good grades. And I have a whopping 130-some foot vertical climb! I'm patting myself on the back as we speak!:)
Of course, if I go my short route I have a remarkable 30 foot climb. :o
The route doesn't show the beauty of my ride. Most of it follows the river and it's just great. Still, this is a fun tool. I mapped some alternate routes and found a good one that's just under 8 miles. Fun! I got to try that soon.

I'm totally topping this! New job = new way more cooler awesome route. Riding downtown is so much better than riding to the suburbs. Compare new route to old. What was once about 40 miles round trip is now 11 miles round trip. Sure, I love riding, but even though I'm riding less, I love the commute so much more.

This is my route. It says 12 miles, but my cyclo computers calls it 7.19...but actually it might be 12...now since I changed the route. Ugh...nah...It.s 7.19 according to my cyclo computer. What do you think is the cause for this difference.
URL for this route is: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2007075 (http://www.bikeforums.net/URL for this route is: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2007075)
Here's my route. Notice I go over a bridge, which is fine. But on the Jersey side I need to dismount and carry it down 20 steps. There's good city planning. Steps on a bridge bike path. Also, since i'm so close to Liberty State Park, it makes for a great lunchtime ride

Another cool site like this you guys might want to check out that I've been using is veloroutes.org/bikemaps and it maps elevation changes and actually tells you how much time you can expect to spend on the ride based on different average speeds. I thought it was pretty cool.
