Great Lakes - Did you ride today?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
07/07/07 - Lucky solo century. I'll post more later.
EDIT: Wasn't feeling good about my prep work, and missing the Plainfield metric on the 4th had me feeling kind of down. I have a wedding to go to today (imagine that...it seems everyone is getting married on 777), but no major plans for the morning. I got up at 5 and decided to whip out a century.
I based the route on an unsupported century CyLowe and I did last year. I got attacked by the exact same bird that CyLowe did earlier this week. Creepy. It was right on Highland about 1/4 mile from the tracks. The bird attacked my helmet 8-9 times. I was hauling butt too and the bird followed for quite a way.
Stopped in Hampshire twice, and once in Morris (?) I think. Good ride. I had a lot of deep power. Rode the entire thing in the large ring (on a compact crank :p ). Came in around 5:45 riding, and 6:20 total time. Not bad to pull a sub-6 century solo..... Good day.
Bird attacked me in exactly the same place on the way back. That bird has issues. This time he found a vent in the helmet and pecked my head.
Feel great for the RAIN ride now. Recovery ride tomorrow.
that bird stuff is just crazy funny. nice ride. i thought you may be more ready for RAIN then you believed.
no ride for me today. to much drinkie last night with the neighbors. i did run 4 miles tonight after it cooled down. hope to put in 40 tomorrow morning. later.

That is bizarre about that bird. I have a deer that follows me regularly when I'm running trails by Fermilab. He runs alongside in the woods. If I stop, he stops. Too funny. Bird pecking helmet....not funny. Maybe your helmets attract him. Do you two both have the same color helmets?
Hampshire to Morris....dude, you got around. Great ride. Crystal

Attacking birds in one spot = nest with eggs and a mother on edge.
7/8 - 56 miles. Glad I started early. It is just hot out there with frequent stop to hydrate and cool off by pouring water all over me. The wind helped fan the heat so it wasn't that bad.

Too hot for me. I rode a slow 38 miles, took me 2 1/2 hours, twice on the way back I had to stop for some shade. The last time only a mile from the car! It was either stop and sit down, or my body was going to do it on it's own. I lost track of how many bottles I went through. I think it was 4 for drinking and two over my head.
Air temp. right now is 88F and I've got a remote sensing thermometer sitting one inch off the concrete sidewalk next to the house ... it's currently reading 128.8F.

7/8 = Yes
a nice and easy 38 miles. went out early (6am) to beat the heat. after two hard rides and yesterdays run i needed to keep the effort light. my average HR was 118 bpm, so i acheived my goal. spotted plenty of other riders out beating the heat too. later.
I logged 35 hot miles. The ride home into the hot wind was tough but it sure felt good when I got home.

60miles with the Bombay Club ride out of Madison. The heat took its toll on everyone in our group by the end and we cut off about 4-5 hilly miles, all the same it was a great ride. I need to get out to more rides with this group, I got better today!:)

Yep. That's the same place. Why can't that bird be like a killdeer and just fake being injured and fly away from its nest and from the rider?
Well done on the 100.

Spent the week in the northwoods, Rhinelander area, and got in 300 miles in 7 days. Lots of hills:) , lots of open roads:D , lots of deer:eek: and lot of beer after the rides:beer: . Felt great, hope that I road enough to offset the eating and drinking.
7/10 - 54 miles and started early again before the heat becomes unbearable.

Rode again from Cudahy to Racine this morning, this time all the way to the harbor and yacht club, 45 miles. Started earlier than the other day, but on the way home, it still was a little too hot for my liking, especially when stopped for a light with the wind from behind. http://www.freedomcrowsnest.org/forum/images/smiles/heat.gif
It sure was nice and cool down by the Racine Yacht club though, nice lake breeze with temps probably in mid 70's. Just beautiful.
45 miles was my limit today though, pretty gassed at the end. Time to just sit in front of the fan and see what happened in the Tour today.

7/17 Did not. Planned to do hill repeats today, but the 20% chance of rain turned into a day-long thunderstorm. Unfortunately, the hills will still be there tomorrow...
7/14 RAIN 160 miles:D
7/17 After work 20 miles...my achey knees from Saturday started flaring up again. I had to cut my ride short. In addition to slight swelling, they now have a nice click on the upstroke. Think I'll take a little break off the bike this week. Yeah I'm a sissy

did you ever look into the extended battery pack for the edge? it obviously lasted long enough for your RAIN ride.
i'm doing the dairyland dare and would hate for my battery to run out...

It's 45.02 miles from my house to McHenry County line to Psimet's house (even when he's not there, on three different occasions, when I cruised over there to get my seat bag I forgot there) and back to St. Charles. I know everybody was wondering about that. So I guess that would be 45.02,45.02,45.02:D

nope. my total time with was around 8:30. at the end of this time and the ride i still had two bars showing. however, once it gets to two or one bar the battery life goes fast. based on this ride and a couple other long ones, i think the battery life is around 9 to 10 hours with all functions running (HR, CAD, and Sats).
so, if you are doing the double at the dairyland you have two options. work on the engine and finish well under 10 hours total time or get a battery back up and strap it to your top tube. later.

Got spit off the back of a 29 mile group ride and then cut off a portion of the route to catch back up. Legs just wouldn't respond when the pavement went up. :o

An easy 20 miler around the 'hood this morning. My legs felt surprisingly peppy. Running long tomorrow morning with a friend...now that could be ugly!:D I think my legs will be reminding me I rode 160 miles just a few days earlier.

That happened to me on Tuesday night. Was just hanging on the back of a fast group and then we hit a hill. I was off the back and watched them go 100 yards, 1/8 mile, 1/4 mile, off into the distance....
7/18 - 22 miles. It feels good to be back on the saddle after a week off.

07.18 - 20 miles with the Bicycle Club of Lake County on their Wednesday night ride out of Libertyville. I decided to lead the B group and ended up leading about 95% of the ride. Pushed hard averaging almost 21 mph, but my avg. heart rate was 172bpm (ouch!). I felt really good the entire ride and my legs could have gone for many more miles.
Edge data: http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/3341610
^^^^ wow 172 bpm avg and 30 plus minutes in your 90% zone is some serious effort for 20 miles. nice ride.
07/19: 40 miles today in a bit over 3 hours riding had 2 flats and ate lunch 1/2 way so 1:22 hours off bike.
7/19 - 28 miles. I have been riding my old Trek the last 2 days and seems to me I'm really putting more effort on this bike. Average speed dropped from 14.5 MPH on the Dahon to 10.7 MPH on the Trek and I know the cause, the tires and gearing. Upgrading is not scheduled until next year when this bike will go on a serious multistate touring.

What gives, mother nature? The ride down was like riding thru soup, or perhaps some sort of stew, the kind they serve in Scandanavia or ALaska to people who are recovering from hypothermia. The ride home was 25mph winds conspiring against me. I feel a bit cheated, Chicago. 35 mi commute, pounds and pounds of sweat. I feel sorry for the various people with whom I had to associate in the course of my daily routine. But you know, the legs are feeling all right.

7/19 18 quick miles on the OPRT, between Frankfort and Olympia Fields. Perfect weather after the front moved thru. Once past the regular Thursday antique car show in downtown Frankfort there was nobody on the trail.

wow, did it hurt? push you off the road???
50 miles this morning mostly at the Busse Woods Forest Preserve. Haven't been there in years so it was quite a surprise to see the number of cyclists and different style bikes they ride such as road, MTB, recumbents, trikes and folders. It was a nice day to ride could have extended the miles if I didn't run out of nourishment and water.

I'm impressed with your cool. I would have said something and start a road rage but we're no match against a vehicle and the crazy driver behind the wheel. I've had my close call with railroad maintenance workers and I believe I saw one last week kind of stalk me so I'm careful and keep an eye on these b*****tard$ when I make my crossing at the Prospect Heights Station. Let it be known on this forum just in case I get a surprise. They work for CN rail company.

I made it up to Cross Plains, WI, early this morning and rode 58 miles of HHH roads and other side roads. Weather was absolutely perfect. Low 70's and no wind that I could tell. There were lots of other riders out, too. Ideal day!
