General Cycling Discussion - Another Stolen Bike

My sister's bike was stolen this morning (She attends USC in Columbia SC). It was partly her fault in that she forgot to LOCK the bike lock, which is key activated.

I had a butt kickin post all typed up, but when I went to submit, I was not logged in or something and it go screwed, so no butt kickin' post.

I am replacing her bike with my Schwinn that I had setup as a single speed. I was in the middle of painting flames on it, so the thing was completely taken apart, and most of the stuff was packed away ready for the move to St. L. I dug it all out though, and rebuilt it as a 1x8( there are alot of hills where her apartment is, so I decided she probably wouldn't appreciate a single speed as much as something with gears) using a STX 8 spd shifter and a 105 rear der. I had a bunch of cogs laying around, so I was able to piece together a decent cassette. The only thing missing is a back brake, I only used a front brake when I was riding it, but I'm not comfortable with her going down hills with only one brake, mainly because there is lots of traffic and all that pertains to such.

When I finished it, I went and buzzed around the base to make sure the chainline worked and all that good stuff. I have to say, the bike was a blast to ride, and parting with it is going to be somewhat bittersweet.

Oh yeah, I never got all the flames painted on, my stencil didn't work as planned, and I decided to finish it in St. L. So the bike right now looks terrible, which I hope will lessen the chance of it being stolen.

Having anything stolen from you is no fun specially a bike.

Fubar do you still need a back brake? I have the back brake I have left from my Fixed gear setup it is a Shimano Sora brake never used. YOu can have it for $5 including shipping.

Person that steals will be punished later on by life itself. And very likely he will regret and will be very ashamed of his action.
First, stealing can directly lead him to getting cought and ending up in jail.
Second, he will grow up, his views will change, and he will realize how sad/low/bad it is to steal. Perhaps, one day he will even become a grandfather, at which his grandchildren look with great deal of respect, but deeply inside, he will remember the day when he did this...

Too bad about her bike being stolen, but if you forget to lock it up....

Kev, thanks for the offer dude! However, at the shop we've got box after box of brake parts and stuff. I think the boss won't mind if I nab a few pieces :D

She's scrapin by as it is, so I felt bad, and she needs a bike to spare herself gas prices. So ole soft hearted Matt..thats another story.

...aaaaand perhaps he's allready forgotten in a crack-induced fog he acquired after selling the bike for a dose of his pharmaceutical of choice. At least thats what happened to my bike thief until he was caught. 18 months in jail for possession of stolen property over $500. Yeah Baby! Nothing to help that memory like prision time!

I just purchased a 1972 Schwinn 3 speed recently on Ebay in case my Pacific Toy Bike Expires. I totally agree on going with Schwinn. Amazing as it seems, that Schwinn was WAYYY better than my Pacific when it was brand new. I'm fixing it up with new brakes, shifter, tires and chain. When it's finished, it's going to be a blast to ride.

Although I thought I'd never say this, but my Pacific Toy bike has exceeded my expectations. After this week, the bike would have paid itself off and everything after is gravy. The only thing I did was reassemble the whole bike from scratch and put on better brake pads. The dual suspension works better than a suspension seatpost and performs very well on New York City Streets.

If anyone ever stole my bike I do not know how they could ride it around...In a small town ,they would have to fence it?
I got a combination cable lock for mine
but I still do not run it threw the front or back wheels:mad:

Well, look at it this way. Yes, it sucks that someone stole your sis' bike for whatever reason. Maybe the thief will sell it for booze or drugs, maybe not. Maybe the thief will be caught and punished, maybe not. Maybe the thief will develop a conscience, maybe not. None of that stuff is under our control, so why worry about it?

But in the meantime, her brother has fixed up a great bike for her. She's got a new bike. The bike has a new rider. And we all keep pedaling along.

I too am sorry to hear the bad news. I have a particularly recent memory of what that feels like. I remember trying not to believe it at first when my bike got pinched. Bikethieves are lower than scum.

Let's hope Hell has an especially hot space reserved for bike thieves.
