Bicycle Mechanics - Cleaning Parts

I have started using laundry detergent (powder) for cleaning almost everything, this stuff is the best...

Now some one tell me whats bad about it, and why people don't recommend it.

It decomposes lubricants and quickens corrosion. So I'd say it's only good for cleaning the exterior and parts you can re-lubricate easily (like the chain).

Just don't throw the bike into the washer and dryer because wives hate that, and the racket could disturb your neighbors!

But laundry detergent is too gritty and it can leave fine scratches in your paint, this is the main reason not to use laundry detergent to clean cars with, even liquid laundry detergent will do the same thing; and laundry as well as dishwashing detergent can slowly dull paint.

It's much better to use either a automotive based detergent like Zymol car wash, or if you prefer a bike specific wash use FinishLine Bike Wash. I use the FinishLine Bike Wash because I have a steel frame bike and FinishLine Wash has rust inhibitors.

OMG! It's got phosfates in it and it will destroy the Earth !!!


Save the Earth! Use tooth powder on your chains !!! lol

I use it to clean the greasy grimy parts, chain, cassette, BB area, and RD.

For the frame and other parts i just clean with water and if needed wd40.

Rims, with degreaser.
