Road Cycling - What do you wear under your shorts?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
What does everyone wear under their cycling shorts? I've tried wearing boxers and pants (UK style, not 'trousers'!), but they seem to crease up and be uncomfortable. Is commando the only way to go? I'd rather not, just because this means I'd have to wash them more often.
Thanks, Ryan.

I believe that most people go commando, myself included. In reality you should be washing your shorts after every ride regaurdless. This helps prevent bacteria from building up that can cause saddle sores.

baby powder is nice to use.
I leave mine to air out before I chuck them in the wash, and air dry them as well.
Sort of a side note, but once a month I'll soak all my cylce clothes in some anti bac soapy water for a while.
I ride free.

If it has a chamois you go commando. If it doesn't you can buy some synthtic "speedo" style underwear, but that is not nearly as comfortable as a good pair of shorts with a chamois.
As Joey, from Friends, said, "You never go commando in another man's fatigues!"

Sigh...
A nazi's work is never done.
No underwear under bike shorts ever. Period. End of discussion.
The only thing that can properly be worn under bike shorts is a thin glaze of Chamois Creme.
Got it?
Good!

Chamois cream, that's it. Underwear will cause issues. And, yes, you should already wash your shorts after every ride.

You can put butter on your bum all you like.
Just not my kind of thing.
Just the thought of going to the fridge in the morning and buttering up my...
If my wife caught me...
And the smell of warm butter eminating from my shorts..
Boy, you all are a little different.

You probably already know this but I wasnt talking about the country crock in the fridge. Basically anything to keep from getting chaffed, vaseline, bagbalm etc. Yes I do apply to myself or my shorts. Pride doesnt keep me from being comfy on long rides.

Okay, I'm kidding. I just don't have chaffing issues at all. The only problems I get are ingrown hair.

I guess that is where my indian heritage helps me. I am not a very hairy person,so know ingrown hairs bother me.
nothing! Thats an absolute "no no"! Just asking for saddle sores if you put anything under your shorts :(

Skin and UMM other parts. A dab of motion lotion (vasaline or otherwise) will be allowed sometimes.
I don't even want to comment on the idea of not having to wash your shorts so often. Wash em after every ride unless you just don't like being clean. We will know who you are by the cloud of flies following you around if you don't.

And if you tried Chamois Butt'r or BagBalm (or udder cream)
you wouldn't get ingrown hairs (or saddlesores by any other
name).
I too chaffed at the thought of rubbing creme or lotion
on my butt. Then at one of the rides I did they were giving
out sample tubes of Chamois Butt'r (enough for maybe 2 rides),
major difference.
as the commercial used to say
Try it, you'll like it
(you really didn't think I was gonna say
"Lets get mikey. . . " did you?)

A little sweat on a hot day. :D
Maybe a touch of baby powder.
Or a little chamois cream on occasion.
I'm surprised A. troll hasn't posted something in this thread. :)

I would guess it was from the photo shoot in Barcelona.
A gathering of over 7,000 people pose nude in front of the Museum of Arts of Catalunya at daybreak in Barcelona, Spain, Sunday, June 8, 2003. American photographer Spencer Tunick gathered together a sea of nudes covering a central Barcelona avenue, his largest work yet.

Yep, that was the big event. Or it could be the international convention of what to wear under your bike shorts.

I wonder if that was the Underwear Nazi with his head up in the middle of the picture, checking to make sure there was no underwear on anyone there.

There IS a place for an Underware Nazi in this world.I never knew there was one,but...................He's 100 % right. A lot of thought and engineering goes into the design of bike shorts. There are many types.
Try experimenting around with different kinds of really quality chamois (padding) if you can afford it ......It's amazing how comfortable you can be.

Quite the contrary. Lycra shorts are much more comfortable than the alternatives. If you don't like the look of guys in riding shorts then... don't look.

Spelling was never your strong point, was it?
If you're not happy with men wearing spandex, I highly suggest you don't look.

Tsk, tsk.
You poor misguided, misinformed newbie.
Look at the pro cyclists. They spend more hours with a bike saddle wedged between their butt cheeks in a week than you do all year. And do any of them wear underwear? NO. And do you think they would wear lycra shorts if they were uncomfortable? Of course they wouldn't. And do you think that they might know a little more about bicycling than you? Well, sure they do.
Even the hotshot freeriders up on the North Shore....under those rad stylin' baggies they have some nice snug padded lycra shorts and no undies.
Now try to focus on what I'm telling you. Lycra shorts are not about looks. No one cares if it disturbs you. Lycra shorts are about comfort and function. So, get yourself some good lycra shorts and lose the BVDs. And that, my young friend, is the end of the discussion.
Got it?
Good.

Wrong? It's evil!
No under wear here!
Except in winter when I wear underwear, tights, then bib shorts on top.
