Southern California - MT Bike May 5th!! El Moro Poker Ride.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Anyone care to join me at the Poker Ride???
Where; El Moro ( OC)
When; May 5th 8a-12p
Cost; apx $30 + parking ( $5 )
A Mt Bike poker ride! It's pretty good, lots of raffle prizes, a 15+ mile ride.
If you've never ridden El More, this is a chace to become familiar with
quite a few of the trails! I have ridden pretty much all of them, and it's a good
ride.
I know it does cost, but the money is used for trail maintenance.
As I use the trails, and do pretty much zero work on them, it's the least I should do.
Come on folks, lets have a BF group!

What's a poker ride?
What's a poker ride?
There are check points set up at places throughout the park.
The idea is to ride to each spot, pick a card and it's logged on
your sheet.
The best and worst hands win prizes. This is not timed, just check points.
After the ride there is a raffle with lots of bike bling, and a BBQ.
Come on check it out, it's not far from you!!

How technical is the area? A friend of mine may do it but is concerned its over her head....

A "friend", uh huh... well....
It's fire road with some single track.
There are a couple areas that are a little more technical, but those can be
walked.
If you can do Aliso-woods, this is a breeze.

yeah, I 'found her' in the parking lot at my old LBS and we've ridden together a few times... she's a little intimidated so I thought I'd ask so I could pass the info on...
thank you Drew for the info!!!

Sounds fun Drew... is this the same ride that 3F posted about awhile back?
edit: yep... here it is (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=286907&highlight=poker)
I really need a good, long road ride but if nothing comes up by then I think I'll try and make this.

Come on Tiff...
This will be about the same work out ( maybe a little less) than
you did on STT. That's if you do all the check points!!
Join us and I'll spring for your lunch!!
Last time I did this they gave away a few cases of Fat Tire, A bike, Mt Frame,
crank Bros pedals and tools, etc etc...
Oh, just to let everyone know, I think it's $30 + $5 parking.
And I think lunch is extra....

I'll be there (volunteering) at checkpoint 5. If you're a true beginner (like - never rode a mountain bike before), then you would probably do some walking up the steep stuff but overall it's a really easy ride.
This event is held by the ShareMTB club. More info is here:

Mark... what part of El Moro can a true beginner (ie just getting on the bike for the first time) ride? Even
the "flat" Canyon trail has it's slightly technical stuff and I'm assuming the ride is not limited to that.
But for Tiff - there is nothing more difficult or technical than what you already did in Limestone, in fact it will be easier. You should do fine if you choose to do the ride.

The actual ride route is a secret until the day of the ride so I can't say much about that. But if you want a map of the park and a good description, try the site below:
http://www.mountainbikebill.com/ElMoroCanyon.htm
As for what can a true beginner do? All of the fire roads. Again, they would likely have to walk up the steep sections and may have some difficulty coming down some of the single tracks. But the only way to learn is to get out there and do it. There's no shame in walking your bike over things you're not comfortable doing. We all did it when we started riding!
The main "El Moro Canyon" trail is excellent for true beginners. It's a gentle fireroad climb into the interior of the park. BFI is also a relatively easy way up.
Remember folks, that the sport is called "mountain biking" for a reason ;)

She was having surgery today
Oh no...thats aweful....sorry to hear that...
Just felt bad for her We used a tube to make a sling
Then we had to walk out about a mile and a half
And she was in pain
But thank god she was wearing her helmet
It was smashed and almost broke in half
So only small cuts on her face :(
Sorry to hear that.
Hope everything heals OK.
Helmets are cheap insurance against head injury.
the ride was good, plenty of good friendly riders.
I think it was around 15 miles, with a few good climbs.
So who went to the ride ? My friends that I mentioned that were going to do the ride won the raffle's grand prize ... The Felt Fat tire bike. My friend who won gets a little crazy anyone see him make a fool of himself.

I think I'm the only one that showed up out of our group.
LOTS of raffle prizes, and I'm kind of surprised I didn't win one, as there
were way more prizes than people.
They gave away 4 bikes, a KHS single speed 29er (grand prize, best hand),
and 3 beach cruizers.
I saw your friend win the Fat tire bike bike ( grand prize raffle ) you'd have thought he was 10!!
There was also freebies, water bottles, fat tire bling, etc.
The ride itself was really well done.
It really was a good time.

the trails are in great condition.
The route went like this;
Moro canyon, to "I think I can"
south ridge to "fence line"
down "elevator"
up "slow and easy"
back down "north ridge"
into the canyon and up "e-ticket"
back to parking lot.
A great ride.
