This caught my eye. I don't know what 5 billion is in US dollars but would likely be a windfall for any city. It just goes to show you with some creative marketing, any city can do the same. Unfortunately, hotels usually cringe the moment you walk in with a bicycle and ask for a room.

5 billion Euro is currently well over 5 billion US dollars. Around 5.5 I believe.

Was this for all of Germany or a specific city. I have to believe it is for all of Germany. However that is still a huge number.

... And it's a hell of a lot more in terms of Australian dollars, yet apart from Victoria, nobody in this country bothers making the effort to promote it. Yet our ailing tourism industry has just asked for a government hand-out to prop it up. :rolleyes:

50 billion is NOT the amount of money they are going to get, it is the money Germany currently recieves from cycling tourist (Does anyone know if this is true, it seems hard to believe? Perhaps they are counting the tour and other pro-races)


In the 2002 Federal Budget, € 100 million are earmarked for the construction and maintenance of cycleways along federal roads.


Within the framework of the Local Authority Transport Infrastructure Financing Act, the Federal Government uses funds from the mineral oil tax revenue


Up to 50% of the costs for measures to promote cycling can also be financed from the European Regional Development Fund within the framework of the EU's Interreg III Community Initiative

I find it odd that an industry that creates 5 billion in tourism needs to tax mineral oil to raise 50 million to promote cycling tourism. I think if this were to happen in the USA we would tax the tourist.
