Mountain Biking - Converting from SS to gearerd, am i going to NEED a chain guide?

Well the whole SS speed thing is killing me. I popped the chain trying to go up a hill and the chain dropped a couple times and the gearing i just couldn't get it right so the time has come to switch the back out.

Bike has a der hanger, wheelset just has spacers on the cassete, and the frame has all the cable stops.

My question is if i put an 8 speed on the back, Deore long cage, will i need a chain guide on the front? I just do single track and xc. No jumps or crazy downhills.

You could, but you'd be better off with your riding style by getting a triple up front removing the big ring putting a bash on it, and run a front shifter/deraillieur as well.

were you using a chain tensioner for your SS conersion? if not something like the surly singleator or even an old deraileur would fix your chain dropping problem

also using a chain tensioner would also allow you to run basically any gear you want not just a magic gear
