I don't have any good XC race pics, so here's one from a 'cross race last fall. It gives the illusion that I can go fast. ;)

PS - I was ON that day. Won my cat (4, big deal) and was 3rd overall on the day. This year I got the upgrade to cat3, so 'cross podiums will be hard to come by.

Okay, a little background first. I didn't get to pre-ride the course so I didn't expect the water crossing where it was. A sharp right hand turn led to the blind enterance to the river. To the right, it was supposed to be shallow, obviously, I tracked out left and "b!tch" I think was being said...

This past weekend at Park Mammoth Mash in Park City, KY. My first (and last) race in rain & mud. My paper number plate didn't survive the pre-ride. It was an absolute mess.

Salsa likes mud, and he doesn't like gloves. I guess they get muddy.

One less thing for mom to wash.

What the pictures don't show is that it was freezing that day as well as extrememly sloppy!

All bundled up & coddled with gloves, heh?

Where were you yesterday? The weather was just PERFECT at TDL!! Low to mid 70's, threatening to rain, but not doing so. Really quick finish time - 1.35 something for the Pro/Ex (2 laps)

Racing doesn't have to consume you. I race, not necessarily that competitively, but it's also not my focus. I'm learning the the different courses and having fun this year. Next I should be more competitive. I know my training takes a back stage to other things in my life, but it is a constant shuffle for me what is a priority. Generally speaking: 1) family 2) work 3) racing (mountain and auto-events).

I was lucky enough to land on a team this year (I hope they have me back next year) and raced my first 12 hour race on Saturday. What a blast. Completely last minute though. I was called on Friday at dinner for the race on Sat. Anyway, here's a pic of that race. Not knowing the trail, I was the only one in my group that got faster for the first 3 laps. My fourth was at night (4 minutes before the cut-off of 10 pm). I will say, two Cat Eye Double Shots are the cat's meow!

This was my third lap. I was beat and beaten. The lap before I had a crash as I crested a hill and saw a guy in the middle of trail, just before a bridge. Since I was looking at him, I didn't see a rock. Over the bars I went. I'm just glad it was near the top of the hill before I got any speed going...

[edit: didn't realize the pics didn't show. Trying again.]

I was at that race also and it was horrible. I had to completly tear the bike down, clean it and put it back together. I'll skip a race like that next time. I did win my class though so that's a plus.

I have raced for five years now, I've put my time in. I made my goal of winning a sport race and doing well in quite a few others. I know I am relatively fast, I have nothing left to prove to myself nor anyone else. The other part is that if I were continue racing I feel that I should move up to expert. I just don't have the time nor the energy to train enough to be competive in that field. I'll leave that to the real racers.

If I decide to do a race here and there I will. Until then I'll leave it to everyone else. All I know is that training to win consumes way to much of my time.

One day when you wreck and throw a hand down and it gets eatin up, you'll wish you had gloves on. The extra grip is nice and I'm guessing you've never used them to even know what the point is???? Same thing goes for wearing glasses, eye protection is more important than anything in my book.

I have to defend Salsa real quick. Granted he is still just a young 'un the kid has grown up on and around bikes. He probably has more experience with them than 95% of the people around here. He has done over 100 races so he is definitely experienced.

I still don't understand why he doesn't wear gloves but that's another story.....

KrisA

I used to not wear gloves, finally after countless bloody knuckles from bashing them into trees, I started using them. I figure I've saved about a pint of blood in the past 3 years by making the switch.

first when you wreck throwing your hands down is the wrong thing to do because you'll break your wrist been there done that. i have raced with gloves for years. i dont think the give you any extra grip. wearing glasses in WV just doesn't work because they get covered in mud or they fog up and you cant see.

Dont worry about those few older people who try and dwarf you with age, salsa. You're younger, smarter, and you're not a 40-something trying to look cool on Internet forums.

Plus, I bet you'd kill 95% of us in the dirt;)

Here are a couple more pics from the Mammoth Mash race that Duane and Rico mentioned earlier! It was a crazy muddy mess, but overall it was an odd kind of fun. I think the people with vbrakes, and/or mechanical discs had more pains than those with hydraulic. So much mud!!

^ are you planning on doing the XTERRA in upstate (NY) in september? I was thinking of coming out for that. I've only done 1 Tri before(XTERRA buffalo creek) it was torture, but afterwards you kind of remember how much fon it was. Plus the fam can come out (I'm an NY transplant in CO).

I would love to do that race but I have a 1/2 ironman in Rhode Island on 9/9 and the Vermont 50 on 9/30.

I am kind of saving up for those two weekends.

I am probably going to do the local xterra sprint race in august sometime just for fun (well actually, there all just for fun).

I'll be back in richmond next year for the championship race unless something crazy happens .

they are very well run events.
