A Question For The Old Timers- Or Those With Old Frames

I recently picked up a used frame (a custom frame from Belgium, spaced 126mm) which has the canti studs spaced at about 63mm apart, not the 80mm of frames from the early 1990s and beyond.

I'm having trouble finding a modern brake which works on this frame as there is not enough vertical pad adjustment and the pads hit the tire. I'm currently using an old set of LX cantis which are a PITA to adjust and find decent pads for.

My question is this; What was the canti stud spacing on early to mid 1980s Cyclocross frames? Was it 63mm, or do I just have an oddball frame? Thanks.

MAFACs were probably the cantis that were originally on that frame.

Maybe Paul Neo-Retros would work or maybe IRD CAFAMs.

I'm sorry, but otherwise I don't have any information about the spacing of the brake bosses.

I'm having the same problem using an 80's touring frame for a CX bike. I'm trying to install a set of avid shorties 4 and the front won't work. I can get the pad low enough. I thought that the pad was built for 27"s but the rear works perfectly.

I wrote to Paul's and they said none of their brakes would work. It's a bit of a mystery.

Sorry, I forgot about this. The canti bosses are 64 mm apart on the front fork and 68 on the rear. I'm using some early LX cantis on the front and the avids on the rear. I may have to lookinto a new fork.

Sounds a bit like my set up. So the Avids will work for 68mm spacing, but not 64mm. Hmmm.... I'm using old LX as well, which are a pain to set up. Thanks for the info.

Thanks. I already have a set of 1995 LX cantis which work, but they are a pain to adjust. I'd like to find something modern which takes a standard V-brake cartridge shoe. It'd make life much easier when pad changing time comes.
