Don't know about that early. How about a more reasonable and hopefully warmer 9am? FWIW forecast has high wind warnings for Friday. From Accuweather - Winds gusting past 45mph with periods of rain. If that is actually the case I'll be riding inside on the trainer. Right now Monday looks like a better day for me, though it would be in the afternoon like 12:30 or 1pm.
It's supposed to be a wash tomorrow morning, but there's a group ride with Major Taylor's club on Sunday that I'll be heading out on; I think they're leaving Strictly Bicycles at 8:30am.
I'm not sure now what time I'm heading out. Probably later than 6AM. I'll try to post again tomorrow.
I'm heading out 8:30ish to Nyack or so. Will be passing by the BB at 9 if anyone wants to meet up.

Sweet, I'll be on that ride! It's the last "official" ride so it's going to be slow but hopefully we will all battle it out on the way back :D

Got out this am for a short ride across the GWB to River Rd, as far as the top pf the hill at the Englewood Boat Basin, then back home to get ready for work. Near perfect weather, a little warmer would have been perfect. Now I have to find my shoe covers. Toes were frozen by the time I got back home and it isn't even real cold yet!

We were down there this morning. My group met up @ the GWB at 8:00am and headed south on River onto the road that led us north to the Alpine Boat Basin. Got to check out an OLD graveyard down there as one of the guys flatted so I had some time. Really wild to see someone having died or was born in 1797, I think. That last hill before the PP Police station was alittle tough, but we knocked it out. We then headed up to Piermont. Alittle chilly but, a great day to ride. I had on a Craft winter underlayer shirt, booties, gloves, Windstopper vest and skull cap to keep warm. It still seemed cold still at 10:30am.

I haven't been up that way in a while, but today was a great day to be out. Did you join a group or was it an impromptu meeting of riders? It would be nice to ride with you and Rene again, though Sundays have been really tough to get out which made today unique. The ride was a lot of fun since we went through some stretches I've never ridden on and we rode into Rockland Lake then back to Nyack. If you get a day off during the week and are up for a ride let me know as well, I'd be up for that.

Nice meeting you kimconyc, and a pleasure riding! Next time you're around these parts let me know so we can plan a ride.

No, he texted me to let me know they were riding @ 8am. We were a group of 8-10 maybe? You probably know I get most of my mileage on the weekends, especially Sundays. By the way, we saw Anachronismgirl on our way back- what was her name? I forgot. Their gonna do it again this Sunday, but I wont make it- wife will be in A.C. for the weekend. I'm gonna be off in Dec.- 29th and 30th since Jacob is off from school. Aside from that it's tough for me to ride during the week. I'll give you a shout or text you. Stay well Jorge.
I did that route a couple of times with the 5BBC, all the way to Bear Mountain. We hopped on the train to get back though and I wasn't in the shape to ride up the Bear Mountain. It was a great ride. But yeah, pain in the neck to get to GWB from Queens.

OK, trying this again...
Anybody up for a SLOW (like 12-13 mph) ride on Wednesday morning, 9ish?

Try me in January. I have to work Wednesdays until then.
Suddenly I have ride time around noon today. Anybody know the road conditions? Is it rough ice on the shoulders?
FOUND IN THE STREET, Sylvan and E. Clinton, around 9PM tonight. One pair of bike goggles, missing a lens. Identify it and it's yours.
Tonight 10pm: Riverside Ride (meet at Columbus Circle).
Tomorrow 6am-ish: Inwood to the top of Bear Mountain and back. Anybody want to go with?
I'm way out of shape, so SLOW is the key word.
Are any of you guys among the nut cases I've seen on my sub-freezing Bear Mountain rides the last two Sundays?

This past Sunday wasn't' so bad
Yeah, it was much better than the previous week. I don't think it broke into the teens, though it felt like low-20s around 7pm in Haverstraw.
This Sunday was pretty perfect, what with the North wind pushing you home. Every other day or so I've just been riding between 50 and 60 miles from my place in Brooklyn, which puts me around the NY/NJ border, and back at a steady aerobic pace. I can't wake up early, and on the rare occasion that I do there is the matter of espresso and breakfast. I am looking forward to warmer weather so I actually feel like trekking to Bear Mountain--though pushing through Manhattan on the tail end of that ride seems pretty miserable. I'm in the habit of taking longer rides on Long Island.
I'll be out there tomorrow. Leaving my job on the UWS around 2 PM, and hoping to get home at sundown. Grey helmet/red jacket/black bike.
I live in Inwood, so it's a three-mile warmup over the GW and into Fort Lee. Bear Mountain can even sort of be a spur-of-the-moment decision in Nyack; provision up at the Runcible Spoon and head North when all the roadies are mounting up and heading back South.
I'm the orange bike and green Carradice saddlebag.
OK guys, I'm not even going to pretend this is anything but a blatant pander for ego strokes:
I rode to Albany yesterday.

What route did you take?
9W, Bear Mountain Bridge, 9D, 9.
Basically just kept looking for little green pictures of bicycles.

Rode to Albany and back?? How many miles, sounds fun.

Just one-way. I was on racing slicks and some serious snow was starting to move in, so I caught Amtrak back.
It was around 150 miles. I'm a slow rider right now (and it was below freezing), so it took about 16 hours.
Awesome trip, noteon!
I've only been riding my commuter around for a week. Leaving right now for my first bike ride in bibs since the day before the storm. Yowza.

The same except I was watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Secret of the Ooze
Noteon - Great job! Hope I catch you on the road one of these days.
Hey guys,
I'm pretty new (to cycling in general, but more-so to road) and always see a group on Sundays headed up Strawtown Road in West Nyack toward New City. You guys around here? I'd love to join you some day.

Or they could be cutting over towards Valley Cottage and Rockland Lake. There are lots of good roads for riding in that area.
agreed, normally I see them on strawtown headed thru the 4-way stop, and I'm pretty sure they continue on strawtown when it splits and becomes brewery, which'll take you down to the reservoir IIRC.
that doesn't necessarily answer who they are and where they start, though :)

Looks like a pretty nice weekend coming up, anyone from Brooklyn/Manhattan thinking about riding up?
BTW anyone know if the south path open? I've actually never been over the north side... :o

I always see a group on Sundays headed up Strawtown Road in West Nyack toward New City.
Strawtown is used by a lot of folks heading up to Rockland Lake, or the Orchards or Little Tor.
Coming up from the GWB, the route is:
9W north
L Oak Tree > Greenbush > Western Highway
L 59A
R Strawtown
to Rockland Lake:
R Congers Rd > Lake Rd
to Orchards/Little Tor:
CS Ridge Rd
L South Mountain
Good riding.
No idea about that particular group you're seeing...

Noteon. On learning that 9 keeps going all the way to the boarder as "Bike Route 9," I started thinking about NYC-Montreal this season. But, as far as Albany anyway, is 9 interesting? A direct route has its appeal, but for 350 miles I'd rather it not feel too highway-like.
Thanks.
I thought it was a pretty route, for the most part. In the fall it ought to be gorgeous.

Been a member of BF for some time now and I'm very interested in these group rides you all got going on. How do I join and what's the ability level of the group? What's the usual time commitment as well.

Excellent. Thanks. Now I just have to find the time.
If anyone is wondering, Henry Hudson Drive is definitely closed. From the looks of it, the drive will be closed for a while. This didn't stop me and another idiot (no offense, if you post here) from spending the better part of an hour hopping over, under, through, and around fallen trees yesterday.
"Well, we're this far in so there's no point in turning around now...."

This was nowhere near the worst of the damage. My favorite was probably a tree trunk snapped in two lengthwise, half of which was precariously suspended--because it was so thin as to be bending downwards under its own weight--30 feet over the road. That was when I realized that I probably shouldn't be down there.
Heed the warnings:

PSA:
Henry Hudson drive is still closed, and looks like what you'd expect after sustained 50mph wind blew through there. Simply unsafe to ride
Cyclists in NYC, watch for potholes. They are coming out en masse on riverside drive. By far the worst is 165th street through. They cut through the pavement to do something, and left a gash that runs across most of the road, and it's at least 1 inch deep. I couldn't avoid it on my way back & got double pinch flats...

Got out to ride this weekend with some of the boys from Tread Bike Shop. We met @ the GWB @ 7:30 and headed to Nyack. Wow! What a great Saturday.
The weather was beautiful and 70*. I saw one guy get pulled over though on 9W by a Palisades township policeman for rolling thru the red light-
don't know if he got a summons or warning, but that's weak. I'm hoping this weekend will be just as nice.
Anyone interested in linking up tomorrow? Was going to head up to Piermont, back down 9w and drop into NJ a bit at Hillside Ave to Piermont Rd. and loop back around to 9w. Sometime around 8am?

I meet up with a group that comes from the Bronx(Tread Bike Shop) every-now-and-then @ the GWB. We usually meet on Sat early- 7:30am.
We head north to Piermont, Nyack or Rockland Lake. I got in 33miles today. I rode UP Hillside today- ugh. Everywhere I turned I had a head-wind, but it was nice
to be out.
