9W, bike highway extraordinaire! It never ceases to amaze me how many cyclists converge on 9W every weekend (well, when the weather's nice... river road in the afternoon shadow of winter can be cold!)

I wonder how many BFies on 9W have dropped me and other fellow BFies w/out even realizing it...

Rode over the GWB this a.m. Hopped the barricade & rode through the Palisades to see the landslides. Very still & quiet with no car traffic in there. Still a few big trees down. Hope they get those cleared up soon.

Efin A! Got a ticket over there. Shot over to river road, past the road block to the landslide, and on the way back a cop car was sitting at the gate. My riding buddy and I got a ticket for riding on a closed road and then riding without a helmet. Just great.

When I was there there was a steady stream of bicyclists and pedestrians - that's complete BS! I'd fight that.

.:Jimbo:.

Yeah, I have a court date. Definitely want to fight that. The worst part was he was sitting right at the gate, waiting for the cyclist to come out and nail 'em. If he was the cool, he would have been there when we first entered but his intentions were to drive off, clearly let a few in, and nab em on their way. My buddy and I, whom any one up there might have noticed him, as he's was wearing his new all pink Spiuk kit, stuck around and let a couple of cyclist know of this cop's lousy way of filling his quota. We eventually took off, as I needed to be in work later on that afternoon. It was a nice ride otherwise at least. Funny thing too, I had a customer in the shop that saw me get my ticket!

See - I actually thought that the road was closed just to cars since there was a huge space to let bikes in on the sides. If I don't have to ride off road to go around a barrier I wouldn't think it would apply to bikes.

Good luck - total BS.

Ooof. Sorry man. I actually thought of that when I was on my way back to the gate... 'Uh, what if there is a cop there...?"

I was caught by a cop descending the alpine hill at night (which btw is awesome pitch black) a few years ago. He said that the park was closed at sun down and we told him that a) we didn't know and b) there wasn't a gate up at the top of the hill where we entered. He let us off with a warning.

The ticket doesn't say, but I have a court date. It does have a short list violation penalty's on the back, and the closest I think that relates to me is "creating a hazardous condition", which of course is listed with the biggest fine at a 70 penalty. I don't know how I'm suppose to plea not guilty for not wearing a helmet, I suppose I'll shoot for a reduced fine.

good luck in court. I'm surprised a cop would even bother with something like that.

A lot of cops don't even turn up in court for those tickets, especially since most people just pay the fine. If you turn up and the cop doesn't, the ticket will be dismissed.

Cops are so lazy they won't even ticket you when you cut them off. I blew through a red light not knowing a police car was about to enter the intersection, it slammed on it's brakes, blipped the siren at me and yelled out the window "what the hell ya doin!!!" In the end, we went our separate ways.

A heads up if anyone hasn't heard, but 9W is now closed to cyclists and pedestrians from Piermont to Nyack. As an alternative you would have to use Tweed, the Rail Trail, or Permont Ave.

Wait... you mean there's a helmet law for bicycles? ADULTS on bicycles?

Does anyone regularly ride to Nyack Sat/Sun - not to early? Need to motivate and looking to ride with someone.

I think because it's a park it's a park rule - I vaguely remember seeing a sign about having to wear a helmet on a bike in the park. Also a minimum of 24" wheels which I thought was interesting since the road (at least where I was) would have been fine with a folding bike and 20" wheels.

It is a park rule, and it is posted. Normally in NJ helmets are only required for anyone under 18.

20" wheels are also not allowed. But I've used my folding bike (20" wheels) there several times, including once when the Park Police told me the park was closed. I think that rule is to keep out BMX riders.

If I'm around, I will go. I am thinking about doing a short tour this weekend, but didn't plan far enough in advance and am kind of having an issue finding available campsites....

It seems that the DOT has rescinded this ban. It has been reported that the signs that went up on 9W have been taken down

I might head up there Sunday or Monday. slvoid, do you ever ride with NYCC?

slvoid
05-24-07, 06:12 PM
Seems like most people wanna head up there sunday. I'm kind of still on the ball cause my gf wants to do a bunch of stuff too so I'm probably only gonna go up there 1 day and do loops earlier in prospect park another day.
I don't think I know what the NYCC is to be honest.

Slvoid, When you ride, do you have a minimum pace you keep?

My plans are to do a little of it tomorrow (leaving from work), Sat is girlfriend day, and Sunday i'd love to do the whole Nyack and back. But would you get bored riding a 16-18mph pace?

slvoid
05-24-07, 09:24 PM
I dunno, I'd like at least one day to be a fast ride to nyack and back. I usually average anywhere from 22-24 on the flats, maybe 12-16 on the uphills coming back.

I can probably do that. And if I can't you can abandon my slow *bleep*.

What time sunday morning?

Total trip from prospect park is, what, 60 - 70 mi?

slvoid
05-24-07, 09:47 PM
Yeah, I mean, if anything you can just draft behind me but i probably won't be going that fast anyway, my knee's still giving me some problems from that idiotic 150 miler on the fixed gear. I just wanted to put in a big ride this weekend before doing the 150 next sat. Leaving at 11am sunday?
I think it's somewhere around 60-70 mi round trip. Ideally I'd like to just do the whole thing w/o stopping.

The usual route is, over the brooklyn bridge, up the west side path until like 75th street then cut onto riverside all the way up. Coming back is the same in reverse but the west side path can get kinda crowded, are you comfortable if we cut onto the west side highway from the bike path?

I'll have to try to reschedule g/f to sunday, and I'll be starting off hurt if I do 40-50 tomorrow like I hope to. Let's circle back tomorrow afternoon and see how it looks.

Traffic don't bother me none. I commute in on Broadway in Brooklyn, then up 1st ave to midtown.

I find taxis, delivery trucks, and SUVs less annoying than the clueless *bleeps* wandering randomly around on the MUP. At least in the city where nobody really ever gets going over 25mph.

That said, it's your ride, and I'll hang on whatever route you choose.

If anyone else got a late start today and wants to head to piermont within the hour, respond here. Leaving from midtown, will do 501 or River Rd if it's open (9W is too damn hot). Overall average 17-18mph, might be slower today from the heat.
Edit: According to the website, the river road is open, so I'll be giving that a try.

I did Nyack and back on Friday solo... 68.8 miles R/T to Myrtle and Broadway where I reset the computer.
I'm planning to go again tomorrow, but I honestly don't know if I can hang with the slvoid pace.

14mph was my average speed (rolling), and I had to stop twice and regroup, once for a good 15 minutes, maybe more. Those hills straight up killed me. 39.8MPH max downhill on the way out.... though I hate helmets, I bought one today. No more big fast hills without one.

My plan is to keep going up another 5mi at least (15mi if I think I have it in me), and try to make it a brutal 100 miler tomorrow.

Anyone up for a 100mi. or if you think my pace for 70mi won't crimp your style slvoid, write back and we can meet in the AM. I'm hoping to start around 10ish.

I went yesterday and I had a lot of shopping to do today and more shopping tomorrow. So I'm out. My computer wasn't working that well, the wireless transmitter kept going on the fritz (Jimbo, you screwed me again!) but the round trip there and back is usually 62 miles or so, took me from 11am-2:15pm, so around 19mph average.
I think the next big ride I do is gonna be next saturday's 160 miler.

I went yesterday after work (only to Piermont though), and i'm thinking about cruising casually around brooklyn on the tour ride (since my g/f can hang with that and we'll get a day out together).

I'm planning to do an EARLY Nyack run Monday morning (took the day off work to ride). And I do mean early leaving 6AM, and fast (for me), because I have to be home, showered, dressed and ready to leave for LaGuardia by 1:30 PM.

So, wanna do a monday morning run?

GF ended up cancelling today, and this hurricane is coming in Monday looks like a no go... so I did the Piermont run today solo.

Great day! left 10:30 am, no stops to Piermont at 12:10. Left Piermont 12:30, back home in Brooklyn at 2:30.

Fought a stiff, damp headwind the whole way back.

I can tell I'm getting stronger.
