so i guess there were no rides planned this weekend...it is supposed to be mid 90s!

My wife works weekends so I usually ride at the crack of dawn. I'll be out tomorrow and passing by the bridge at 6:05ish for a ride up to the state line; early morning rides are the best in this kind of weather.

And I'm doing the NYC 200K tomorrow. Basically the Bear Mountain run on steroids with a time limit.

Good luck. I just got back from the morning's ride and it's going to be a hot and humid one out there.

Jorge, there's an impostor out there on an orange orbea orca (wow, holy alliterations, bat man) with williams wheels. i almost thought it was you until i read your post from earlier this morning. the said impostor was spotted in nyack at 10:30 this morning. i think you ought to teach the said fred a good lesson on the importance of paying royalties when copying someone else's style ;)

btw, it was hell out there. went out at 9 & back at 2:30. the trip was to the orchard by rt45 & us 202. helluva a hot day & i had to nap for an hour to recover

Thanks for the update, I will be on the look out and when I do find the imposter he will get Cinzano treatment.

Did you start in NYC? I'm looking for some nice rural riding. Nyack, Piermont, and Bear Mountain are nice* but I need some variation.

(*Except for that shoulderless hill - both ways - on 9W just south of Bear Mountain. Talk about getting buzzed...)

I started in NC, moved to NYC, in W.PA for the summer where I grew up. In my opinion, best overall riding is in NC (it's too busy in NYC, and I can't handle all the steep but short hills in PA very well)

For those tired of 9W:

I got permission from the New Jersey Randonneurs to share this cue sheet. It's the NYC 200K brevet I did a week and a half ago, which includes a run up to (and over) Bear Mountain. That's just the first leg of the brevet, but if you ignore the other 80% of the ride, it's a nice alternative to 9W up and 9W down.

I took it just as far as Closter Dock Road a couple of days ago, picked up some vegetables at a roadside orchard, and rode back. A nice 25 miles or so, plus cheap fresh food.

It's in Excel format.

Thanks for posting. I may have a look this weekend. Supposed to be beautiful weather.

anyone doing a Brooklyn--> piermont ride this weekend? My usual riding partner is out of town and I am looking for a group to ride with.

A few notes from a ride Saturday - Manhattan to Bear Mountain:

-There was a lot more traffic then usual on Riverside Drive at 6:30am. Not sure if was because of the city streets program or what caused this.

-Community Market in Piermont doesn't have their cooks start until at least 8. The egg, cheese, and ham on a bagel at the Runcible Spoon is not nearly as good. The local cyclists on their cruiser bikes are friendly in the morning and will say hi.

-Decided at the top of Bear Mountain I'd try to navigate back a different way after taking Bike Route 9 for the "out" segment. Seven Lakes Road is great. Some of the nicest riding I'd had in a while. Beautiful area, I'd never been there before.

-I meant to do this route http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/ny/piermont/102127048522657344 on the return. Looked at it a few weeks ago and thought I could remember it. Not bringing a printout was stupid. If you miss the turnoff going east and continue south on Seven Lakes Road past Lake Sebago you will be treated with some really, really horrible road - cracked and broken, sand - speeding cars, and no shoulder. After you arrive at a park station and look at the map (after a couple of miles of downhill naturally) you'll see you can turn around and can take the Lake Welch Parkway to get you back on your route (in this case 106). If you go on the Lake Welch Parkway, you'll see a sign for "St. John's Church in the Wilderness and 106". Take that road. What the map doesn't show is that the Lake Welch Parkway doesn't connect with 106 but goes over 106. If you want to get onto 106 from the Lake Welch Parkway, you'll have to throw your bike on your shoulder and hike down a hill. 106, like the Seven Lakes Road, is nice riding.

-The route I wanted to take goes south on Call Hollow road from 106. Seeing the sign but not remembering if that was the road I wanted I figured I'd just keep on going west to route 9W. Unfortunately forgetting that...

-9W through Haverstraw is very unpleasant. Tons of traffic. Not much room on the side of the road. Lights. Cars pulling in and out. Everything one doesn't want in a ride. There's a very good reason that Bike Route 9 diverts around it.

-Gorgeous day. 10/10 weatherwise. Ride was 118 miles back to my place. Still feeling good I decided to do a couple of very slow laps around Central Park to make it 130.

-Looking forward to doing the route Noteon posted soon.

tldr; If you're going to try a new route, bring directions.

On those occasions when I just don't feel like diverting around it, I go through the auto repair place's parking lot. There's still a quarter-mile or so of scary stretch, but at least the parking lot is a place to swerve out of traffic after the big sprint.

This is good to know. Good idea.
