Northeast - NYC: Piermont/Nyack/Bear Mountain Weekend Rides

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Wow - great job. My body winced just looking at that graph

6 Gaps was everything it's supposed to be. Not just 15,000 ft of climbing, but 15,000 ft of steep climbing, with long hilly miles in between.
Having climbed all 6 mountains (without blowing up or having to stop), I'd call the day a personal success on every level. Maybe next time, I'll be able to attack the climbs rather than survive them... but for now, this was a huge personal accomplishment.
Psychologically, tackling Lincoln gap first made all the difference. Knowing that whatever else is coming, its not as bad as what's already past let me ride without dreading what was ahead.
The morning was cold, but the night was colder. Or at least the last big descent was colder, coming down that thing at 50, soaked in sweat, with temps plummeting below 45, with no sun, and with no blood sugar...
Then the last 15 miles back up Rt 100 in the dark at a flat out sprint to get back quick and also to stay warm... it may have been the best part of the ride.
it may have been the best part of the ride.
That, or your dumping a bottle of gatorade out inside your bag before leaving, having to borrow my spare tights, and then worrying that your backside was hanging out while you were climbing lincoln!

Thank god I didn't go... thank god...

Anyone up for a run up to Bear Mountain on Sunday?

Depending on the weather, I might be in.
It looks chilly and windy this weekend, with a NW wind (thats a dead cross wind).
I need to get a winter shell.

Ahh yes, I've been wanting to test out this damn Smartwool. Looking forward to suffering under orange shade.
Anyway.. if the weather isn't all that great, I'm resorting to Alpine drive (repeats) and pecan pie. Who's in?

Just remember the MS Ride goes through the Palisades/9w this Sunday. Expect a (big) crowd.

Anyone else up for Bear Mtn???
8AM on the Brooklyn Bridge again.... looks like everyone else is on the MS150 ride, so might be just the two of us.
Cya there.
Yo, why don't you wait up at around 9am at the entrance to the palisades park and hook up with us on the MS ride? Champion systems up front usually pushes the same pace we did that last time we flew up to nyack in the fog.

Bear Mountain on Sunday? Weather looks perfect, except for the 10MPH headwind coming home.
I'm in for sunday but up for leaving slightly later.
I'm getting home late sat night and would like a good night's rest.
Sunday looks beautiful though, looking forward to extending the riding as long as it stays warm.

I grew up in Yorktown and drove through the Bear Mountain area all the time way back when. Now I live in Houston, TX, recently took up cycling about 6 months ago and am extremely jealous of anyone who gets to ride in topography like that.

Work was awesome today! I'm glad I was indoor all day today. The weather today sucked for riding anyways.
Started a hair late but I'm glad I turned back at the deli station before bear mountain cause the headwind coming back sucked but I still made it back around 4. Nearly bonked on the way back after doing the last 50 miles on a bottle of gatorade and 2 gels after having squandered all the money in my jersey pocket on illegal narcotics. I'm not sure if those 2 took the train home or what after bear mountain.

After thinking we were going to turn back at Nyack.... we ended up meeting the guy on the red and white trek, and went to Bear Mtn anyhow, convincing ourselves it was ok because we would take the train back.
Mazaev has been working hard... he stopped to take pics going up Bear Mountain... the came whizzing by my like a freight train. His climbing is really improving. He said he paid the price on the way back though... that the attack left him wounded from the Nyack climb all the way home.
We made it to Bear Mtn around 1:40... sat and enjoyed the view and the crowd then decided to ride back rather than take the chance on the bike passes for the train.
Taking off late, at 2:30... We stopped at the same deli on a 5 minute splash and go... I think I got 32 oz of Orange Juice and chomped down a clif bar. We ride the rest of the way back without stopping, straight down 9W bypassing Nyack and Piermont. We made it back in time to watch the sunset as we rode down the west side path.
It was a tough ride back... we cut the pace back just barely enough to make it sustainable and did the whole way back without any real stops. The whole day was a moving avg of 15.5 mph, compared to the 14.0 we were doing earlier in this year. Not terrible for a day with so much climbing.

He was young, tall, black and mouthy. He informed us that we were all "riding on the yellow and all in the road". Apparently that's why he cut you off, although I'm still trying to figure out how he right hooked you if you were riding on the yellow line.
But as I told him to his face, "You just can't educate a moron".
Go to the link and inform them that he accelerated to pass you, cut you off by turning across your right of way, nearly running you over in the process, and then sped 20 ft down the road and parked. Reason for the urgent maneuver? He was going inside to use the bathroom. Clearly important enought to warrant the running over of a pesky bicyle.
Oh, he also informed us there is no bike lake on that road.
I personally think we should all call the university and require that he be fired. It might also be useful to file a police report.
BTW: Do you realize that the guy behind you's threatening you?
"Imma kill you, mutha******! BAM!"

Nah, he's all excited because he thinks I'm gonna descend cross country, Mazaev style.

Columbia Medical Center Public Safety Patrol car #4, 10/21/07, ~10:00am, Fort Washington ave
Corrected above to be: Fort Washington ave
Here is the report I filed using the link above:
Dear Department of Public Safety,
The person driving this car:
Columbia Medical Center Public Safety Patrol car #4, 10/21/07, ~10:00am, Ft Washington Ave.
Was observed to do the following by THREE witnesses:
Accelerated aggressively past a moving bicycle (as if responding to an emergency), then braked suddenly and turned right across the bicycle's right of way, nearly running him over in the process. The bicycle had to both brake and take emergency evasive action, swerving to the right. The Public Safety car then sped all of 20 ft down the road and parked.
Reason for the urgent maneuver? He was going inside to use the bathroom. Clearly important enough to warrant the running over of a pesky bicycle.
When asked why he would speed around a bicycle and nearly run him over, only to pull into a parking spot 20 ft away, he responded that the bicycles were "all riding on the yellow and all out in the road".
I'm not quite clear on how he can cut RIGHT across someone's right of way while making a RIGHT turn if the bicycle in question is "on the yellow center line", but apparently Columbia teaches some kind of logic that just doesn't apply elsewhere.
Regardless, the young man (tall, thin, black), has a serious serious attitude problem. It's one thing to make a mistake... it's something else entirely to blame everyone else for the mistake and be aggressive about it.
This is NOT a person who should be trusted with ANY KIND OF POSITION OF AUTHORITY.
IF YOU CONTINUE TO EMPLOY HIM IN THIS CAPACITY, YOU PLACE COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY IN AN INDEFENSIBLE POSITION creating EXTREME RISK for the University itself.
It is only a matter of time until his conduct results in a lawsuit (or worse) as a direct result of his belligerent, volatile and irresponsible behavior.
You should re-evaluate the mental state of this employee, and take corrective action immediately, most likely including dismissal.
Goin up to Bear Mountain on Sat morning... Anyone else in?
Can ride, hand in a cast for next 2 weeks. :(
how cold is too cold for nyack? this summer was the first season i routinely rode up every saturday, but i really hate riding in the cold and was wondering how late in the year people still make the trip. i think i'll keep going until it hits the 30's, but i may cash out before.
Personally, I'm quite eager to give some of the new winter gear a run for its money. I think once it hits the 30's, keeping the toes warm long enough might be a problem, although chemical warmers should do the trick. Good gloves, hat and some polartech tights should keep the rest happy.
Looks like This weekend might be a no-go though; showers and 20mph headwind does not a pleasant trip make :-/
Scratch that; 8:30 @ Brooklyn Bridge. Probably not all the way up to Bear Mountain, but definitely Nyack.

Riding up to Nyack this weekend. Saturday or Sunday. Haven't been riding much lately, so I doubt I'll be hammering up there. Let me know if you want to meet up. Probably 8-9am.
Looks like this Saturday is out. Damn rain.
Time to resurrect our little thread. Who's in for Nyack on Sun? Looks like it'll be warmer and less likely to rain. I'm starting to miss those Runcible muffins...

Good ride, good company! Thanks everyone for offering a wheel to draft from when my leg muscles start to act up. Hopefully I can return the good deed once I get back to better shape :)
Well, all those trips out there without a single flat had to be made up for somehow, and yesterday was the day. Sorry for the delays.
Otherwise, great ride! Some pics up @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/mazaev/sets/72157603414276112/

Good riding with you guys, for awhile anyway. I felt much better after I heaved what was left of the booze in my stomach on the way back. Lesson learned.

I was checking out your great pics.
I'm new to cycling and check out your posts to get ideas for rides.
I did all of the usual rides this past summer 5 Boro, Harlem Valley, etc.
I'd like to attempt the Montauk ride this May and your pictures give me some idea of what it's like.
btw Does the guy with the beard work in Roy's bike store on c.i.a.?
If it is, he sold me my Specialized Sequoia Elite this past May.

Thanks. I try to document these things somewhat when I can. The Montauk ride was a total blast. It was my first century (and a half) but it's flat (save for some rollers at the end) and there is usually a tailwind. It's kind of expensive, but they do a great job with the rest areas and such. There's a thread about it somewhere. I'm probably gonna ride it again next year.
And yeah, Koja.. err.. the guy with the beard would be Ilya from Roy's. I bought both of my bikes over there. Awesome shop.
