Hey, finally I may be good to go too. I'm coming from Forest Hills Queens. Pain in the butt to get to the west side, but I did it a few weeks ago. I can do it again. Keep me posted on details.

If we do the TU ride on Friday night can we not leave too butt crack early? 10 or 11 would be swell.

Why not sat? Sat's awesome.

And why the hell would you do 5 boro??

Rode hard today - 38 miles with as much climbing in Inwood Park as I could find in preparation. Most of the time I looked down I was up around 17-20 but still only averaged 13. Those quick stops really eat into the average!

New handlebars should be in tomorrow. Very excited!

I could do Saturday, get to put some faces to the fake names on here :)

We have houseguests coming, but shouldn't be coming until evening... what time to start, and where?

Sunday is out for me, I have a wedding to attend, to my great disappointment.

Not before 10:30 would be good.

Just say no the 5 Borough. It's not as fun as you are led to believe. Especially the Staten Island leg.

I prefer "butt crack early" Saturday, but I can be flexible. Married and chores to do. But she may give slack.

I found riding over the Verrazano one of the top 10 NYC experiences so far since I've been here! Not top five though.

05-02-07, 12:27 PM
^^ They don't ride over the bridge in the 5 Boro. They heard you onto the ferry. Usually not enough room for all the riders at once.

Where you starting from? I was thinking of a pre-5B ride but hadn't decided where. Leaning toward Ringwood, but Nyack would work too.

Just did the marshall ride for it this Saturday - we all rode over the Verrazano. *confused* Yeah, they'll be a backup at the Staten Island Ferry though they are adding more.

Bit of bad news - looks like ride yesterday wiped out my rear wheel. Wobbling a good inch or two in every direction. Good news is that my lbs just ordered me a handbuilt one yesterday (call that a preminition or what!) that will *hopefully* be here by Friday. Otherwise I'm screwed for Saturday :(

I know svloid is coming from Brooklyn, I'm right off the path at 36th St so I should meet you somewhere along the way on the west side unless you want to come up the east side and shoot across.

Then you ride up to the ferry, wait, and then take the ferry back to lower Manhattan.

So who's in for Saturday? Let's get a head count and some plan going. I'm in. Flexible time.

Air
05-03-07, 04:30 PM
I can be ready by 10:30ish - I'm be coming from midtown. Maybe we should meet where the Intrepid was? There are benches, straight across from the 59th St Bridge and on the West Side.

I was talking to svloid - I'm not fast (figure 17 for a good portion of it, faster downhill and way slower uphill) so this will probably be a slower ride though he was thinking of making Sunday more of a training run. Or you guys can leave me :)

Good news - New handlebars are on - still trying to get them comfortable.
Bad news - rear rim is badly out of true, not sure if the new one is coming in (may be in by 6 on Friday night - nothing like last minute :D ). I'm going to try to true it up now though I'm not sure how much abuse it'll be able to take.

I'd also be up for a night ride to Coney Island on Sunday night after the 5 boro ride (see here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=249306)).

Thanks! Actually - I kinda trued it last night. Apparently sleep and sobriety stopped me from doing this in the past.

It was good enough to ride into Brooklyn at 5 this morning, going to play with it a little more now that I have the hang of it (and if all else fails a few shots should help).

I don't know how many people are coming but how about meeting at my place at 10:30? It's much quicker getting to the brooklyn bridge from here than going all the way up to grand army plaza.

I'll meet you along the route - I'm still dialing this in, don't want to go to Brooklyn just to come back across. Why don't you give me a call when you're getting ready to leave?

How long would it take you to get to the 50's from Brooklyn on the west side path? About an hour?

I don't know how fast the other riders are but I can make it from my place to 59th street in about 30 minutes if there's not too much traffic. Tomorrow, with the crowds, maybe 45 min.

I have a kryptonite ny chain we can lock him up with, he'll be fine, no one's stolen a dog in this neighborhood.. yet.

So how about gfrance and I (unless he's going to Brooklyn first, but he's coming from Queens) could meet you by where the Intrepid was (is that 59th? Something like that, right under where that little overhead walkway is) around 11:30. Give me a call before you start off.

I am going to have to risk getting over there without a CO2 cartridge backup. Hope I don't flat along the way. Once we get up to Piermont, I can run into the bike shop there and get refills. You guys will have to cover me for the way up.

I'm bringing my pump. Are the CO2 cartridges the same ones you'd get in a restaurant supply place?

I wondered the same thing when I bought the system a couple months ago. Bike shops sell them for crazy prices, but in the wholesale restaurant supply they come in big boxes for cheap. But I don't know if they are in fact the same....they look the same though.

I'll bring one with me - if it fits you'll know :)

So...how many broken spokes would you ride with? I was just looking everything over and noticed a broken spoke. Figured I'd do a more thorough looksee...six - three on each side. Problem? 36 spoke 27" wheel.

At least I know why the wheel was so out of true :D It's semi OK now, only moves less than a cm back and forth. Would the wheel collapse? [There's a problem building the new wheel - I guess they didn't have the rim in stock so that'll be a bit longer. Sigh...] I figure I'll bring the spoke wrench in case it gets caught on the brake pads and take it easy.

I never broke a spoke before let alone a six. I heard pinging sounds when I was hammering on Tuesday...bet that's what that sound was.

Gorgeous day! My knee is still killing me, sorry I had to bail :( Hopefully I'll go with you when the new wheel comes in.

Thanks for the call - I went up a few miles, I didn't make it to the end where it was closed. Well...correction. I went through where all the closed signs and road closed barriers were up, saw where their was at least one large avalanche that seemed cleared but I'm not sure if it was 'that' spot. Made it about a mile or two past a fort (past about three picnic spots, one that was completely deserted). I didn't have a computer on my mtb so I'm not sure how many miles up. On the way back I took a trail that went right along the water and noticed some other trails through the woods, would love to check those out more.

And that headwind coming back for me was killer just in Manhattan!

Air

Oh - and for anyone walking over/under the GW, do NOT step on that rail. It hurts when your foot slips out and you go down the steps on your butt and knee.

It kept grabbing my wheel coming back from the bridge - 3 mph isn't going to do that to me! Actually - I seem to always get a headwind coming down the west side no matter what's happening anywhere else. It did die off later in the day.

Wind yesterday was brutal on the bridges - did you get a tailwind back from Piedmont?

slvoid
05-07-07, 05:56 PM
We had a lot of 30mph crosswinds going up to piermont and back yesterday, but not too bad. The worst part was jimbo wimping out by not runing any red lights, knocking pedestrians down, or riding onto the roadway on the gwb. I mean, just how long does that guy expect to live anyway.

Next week seems doubtful from this standpoint.
