Touring - Anyone take their dog touring?

has anyone used one of those dog trailers or made their own contraption to bring their dog with them? They're not inexpensive.. here's one I found, and I believe Burley makes one too. I'm not talking about a 3 month long tour necessarily. just a 50 or 100 mile away weekend camping.

It's worth a try, though I think they find their way home in most cases...

This is only going to be marginally useful, but I read an online account of a guy from Chicago who rode cross country with his pretty big dog, hauling him in a trailer. I wish I could remember his name, but I think if you googled "dog, bicycle, cross country, chicago," you might find his account. He had one or two major problems with the trailer, but overall it served him and his pooch very well.

Yes, touring with your dog doesn't seem to be a very popular thing to do, which is understandable..My wife and I have a 60 pound german shepard, and at least half of our load would be our dog, plus dog food etc... hmmm... still, we'll make it happen.

this couple just used a regular kid trailer, and their dog was 50+lbs or something like that....
kid trailer would be a cheaper option...

Please, do talk about 3 month tours. Whenever transporting pets comes up I remember the lady I saw towing a golden retriever in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. My immediate family and I chatted with her. She and the pooch were on their way from Key West to Alaska. I brought one of the Sharpie decorated animal collars she was selling to pay the way. (In my wife's size:) ) A day later we met up with my sister who said she had see the lady and dog hundreds of miles to the south pedalling their way through the Red Rock Desert.

The lady did not want us to approach the dog until she had told it to get out of the trailer. Then we could pet it. She had taught it to stay in the wagon and guard it until released.

In the year 2000, I rode a tour called the 'Bike South 2000' one of our riders, a woman, towed a goat the entire 2000 miles in a regular kid trailer. She probably didn't realize when she started out how much a young goat will grow in five weeks, but they both made it the whole distance.

This gentleman is currently in the middle of riding the Southern Tier east to west. Both and and his dog have experienced several medical setbacks over the past few months and had to interrupt the tour. But they are back at it now, in New Mexico.
