I need a good pair of shades for riding. Any suggestions?

I was thinking about getting these:

There were a few things I had to consider when I was looking for cycling sunglasses?

[1] Do you need prescription? And if so, do you prefer removable inserts or permanent single-lens? Some lens styles can be made prescription. Many wraps cannot. Most companies offer insert-capable frames but some like Oakley can take a wrap and embed a prescription lens into it.

[2] Do you want changeable lenses to suit different lighting conditions? Some frames offer the ability to quickly change out lenses.

[3] Do you want side-wind protection (ala wraps)? Some designs hug your face closer and offer more sidewind shielding. While others are like more traditional sunglasses.

I wear contacts sometimes and wanted more sidewind shielding. I also wanted the ability to change lenses and needed prescription for times when I didn't want to wear contacts (read: MTBing). I ended up going with Rudy Project Kerosenes which use Rx inserts that clip behind the main lens.

I have a pair of Madison Ravens, they were £40 at Wiggle, and they come with Amber, Mirrored tint, and clear interchangeable lenses, they are a nice fit, look good, and they are stong as hell.

I'm a 4 eyes. Too expensive to get presription sunglasses. I might get contacts and use regular wrap around sunglasses. Thats if I can get over the whole touching the eye phobia I have. :)

I just think about all the dirt and mud and sweat and gunk that get thrown up around my eyes while mountain biking and decided to leave contacts for road riding.

I dont need anything fancy, just something to keep the sun outta my eyes. My face does get sweaty (hot in las vegas) and the glasses I have now tend to slip. So if side-wind is a band that goes around your head then yes I need that. Those gator skinz look like theyll do just fine. They dont have it in black though :(

I use a pair of silver Rudy Projects. Came with interchangeable lenses in clear, orange, and a darker black for bright-sun riding(like the road). I picked up a pair of reflective-blue lenses for longer road rides. The system seems to work pretty good. They haven't come off my face in many falls and have taken some good abuse.

Here's my contribution... not fancy, but they're cheap and pretty good IMO:

I can have one pair each of clear, yellow, dark grey and mirrored for under US$40. Even the clear ones block 100% UV. They're actually safety glasses, but function well as cycling glasses.

I wear Arnettes. I bought them in Richmond, VA for like 70 bucks. Amber lenses work great for nasty conditions, both dark and light. I like them alot. Make sure to get a lense that is free of distortion, by the way. Distortion + Mountain biking = Scary

Salsa actually makes them? I looked at Salsa's site and couldn't find them. Smith however makes a pair called Salsa. Are these the ones you're talking about? If not, do you have a link to the Salsa ones? I'd like to see them.

If you're anything like me, then you should get some cheapies, coz I lost my $150 Oakley Polarized Minutes and I'm still kicking myself about that.

I have a pair of Native Eyewear Dash SS. I do a lot of activities on and around the water, so I selected these because the dark grey lense is polarized. They're comfortable, yet a bit small for my big face, but I like them. I use them all the time and I have a pair of croakies, so they're always around my neck. I bought the basic black, but they come in a variety of colors.

I had a pair of Smith Buzzsaws, but I lost them. I still have the extra set of lenses, so if you've got a pair with really scratched lenses and want to get rid of them let me know. Or, if you see any on closeout, send me the link.

My wife also has a pair of Smith's, she's on her 2nd pair. Loves them!

You've got to hand it to Oakleys, their expensive but look cool, work flawlessly and are pure quality.

Luckily my brother's friend is an optician so I got them cheap.

I ware Oakley XX prescription sunglasses with fire lenses. Very cool but very spendy. Cost over $350.

The only problem I have with Oakleys is that their nosepiece doesn't fit my nose and they aren't adjustable... at least not the ones I looked at.

I wear a pair of Ryders, it seems every cycling shop up here sells them. They are a shield type, and all of their glasses are 100% UVA / UVB which is important esp if they are tinted.

I wear Yellow lenses, good for trail, and road as well as at night.

I wear cheap no-name things I bought at the gas station. I wear glasses but can still see reasonably well without them so I can get by with plain sunglasses without corrective lenses. I don't spend much on them because I'm bad about losing them. When I rode the MS-150 this year I left my sunglasses at the overnight camp and didn't realize it until I was well down the road. No problem... next convenience store that I passed provided me with a new pair for $6+tax. :p
