Myself, my wife and some friends will be travelling to Pennsylvania the first 2 weeks in August.

My wife and friends will be attending an event located at Coopers Campground which is about 45 minutes north of Pittsburgh.

Since I do not participate much in their interests, I will be doing some cycling there - bringing both road and mountain bike.

Can anyone here give me some details on a good on-road cycling route, or a few good routes in that area? Maybe some short rides of up to 50km and a few longer ones up to 200km.

Anywhere to ride a mountain bike there? I won't have much access to a vehicle if I have to transport my MTB bike, but of course I don't mind riding to a trailhead either, but not a huge distance or anything (say less than 10km).

I have an aerial photo of the Coopers Lake campground and it shows some pretty wide shoulders on the I-79. What's the riding like on that highway? Or should I avoid it?

I'll of course be doing some searching on the internet, but any help here would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't know the area specifically, but I know that PA has some great rail-trails if gravel is cool..

Don't ride on 79. Looks like you'll be close to Moraine State Park, there's some good mountain biking there.

Pretty good riding all through out that area. PM me with a cell phone number and date of your ride and if I am free, I'd be happy to be tour guide. My boat is at Moraine State . I usually sail when I am in that area but have ridden a few of the roads. I have a GPS with maps of the area.

Thanks guys and thank you Spinnaker!

It's not 100% confirmed but looks good (it is still 3 months away so things can come up).

I've been looking at Moraine State Park and I see there is about 6 miles of MTBing and describes it as being for experienced riders! That's good, although a crusher dust flat trail is nice (sometimes) I'd much rather a challenging ride.

Anyway, we'll see what happens. By the way, I just noticed I have spelled cycling wrong in the title. :o

I have been to Cooper's lake before, I live nearby. My MS ride goes right by Coopers, on the other side of 79. We had a fatality 2 years ago, Francis Andrews head-on into a car about 2 miles from Moraine State park. Steep downhill with big curve in it. Please be carefull out there.

I have never done any MTB riding. I can tell you that Moraine is a very nice park.

I'll be happy to join you on the road. :)

Find a lance and perhaps they'll allow you to joust on your bicycle.

Naw, might scratch my bike, that's why we have (and they use) horses.
