Hello folks. Long time listener, first time caller.

Question about HR during long rides to build aerobic fitness. What is the rationale behind riding at 60-70% of max HR during long rides? To limit intensity so that volume can be increased?

I did a 2.5 hr ride at ~85% of HR max. Would I have been better off at 70%? Is there a physiological adaptation at lower intensity that reduces with higher intensity?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Check out this pdf:

Coggan A., Expected physiological/performance adaptations resulting from training at levels 1-7 (http://bike.terrymorse.com/coggan-adaptations.pdf)

That should answer many of your questions.

So, after reading through the info provided, it seems as though my legs are more capable than my heart, and that I should add higher intensity intervals to address this. Seem correct? Thanks for stopping by.
