i definitely would recommend bringing a bike with a freewheel for this.

purplebike

The website is up, the prizes are coming in, the route is set, the bands are picked, and the party is ready to roll.

Check out http://24.fastermustache.org/ for more info!

Anyone from out of town, PM or e-mail me for a place to stay. We can definitely hook you up with a couch/floorspace/bed!

really? i was planning on just gearing down and running a brake. what's a good gear for atl riding?

TheRobbStory

About 400 of us are coming up from the Tampa/St Pete area. I'll have hard numbers for you tomorrow morning. We'll take beer and blowjobs (Luke excluded) in lieu of floor space.

im comin down to get s**t fired up.

whats the route?

Awesome. I'll throw ya'll in the shed out back. Does luke require a cupcakes since he's underage? ;)

As for gearing (hehe giggle, that's my name), I would probably use a free wheel just because your time will be a lot faster and you won't blow your knees out. Several of my friends blew their knees out last year riding hard fixed. I'm going to start out fixed and switch if it gets too bad. My gearing is a 47x17, although I'll have a 16 on there soon. It's not too bad, but it's not Florida. We have hills. And lights on hills that you have to stop for (plus one for a break).

Whenever you have exact numbers of people, let me know and I'll work out the housing situation!

The map of the route is on the website, but if you're familiar with the place names it's Johnny's to the new Lenny's to Octane to Skate Escape to No Brakes to Johnny's. It's longer than last year and more difficult in the fact that it isn't a nice loop. Should be interesting.

fivesix4

each team needs to have one fixed rider right? Does that rider have to ride fixed the whole race?

purplebike

Noone needs to be fixed. We have a lot of squid teams come out on their fancy road bikes, so it's no problem if you ride free or fixed or on a trike or a tall bike. And you can race solo too if that's your deal.

JoshFrank

I'm doing this thing all out squid. Purplebike is the only one that has had a look (;)) at my new secret weapon. Mwahahahahaa ha!

JoshFrank

BTW the solo thing is so my deal.

Dude, let me in on the secret. I won't tell.

If I do you can lock me up in Thai Jail.

Awww, if you're going squid there's probably going to be some a****** on a fixie saying "I could have beat him if I'd had gears".
Be like Kyle and kick all their asses street-fix style. And walk half the last lap with ****ed up knees just to show them how hardcore you are.

You mean blow your knees out and then have problems all year?

After thought and debate, I will most likely be going solo fixed. I haven't decided. I guess I should soon.

Jazzy Jeff

does anyone know about how long the course is in miles for each lap?

purplebike

It's 13-14 miles depending on what route you take.

JoshFrank

Dude, let me in on the secret. I won't tell.
Not really much of a secret I guess, It's a Look 555. I may ride fixed through the Saturday afternoon traffic madness and switch to gears for the night. As far as the route goes, I have found a way to do it in 11 miles but will be blocked Saturday afternoon and a little scary Saturday night.

purplebike

Hey Josh, wanna let a fellow solo rider in on your short route secret? I rode it last night and was kinda unhappy.

TimArchy

yeah, the route... I guess it goes by lots of sponsors and stuff. Maybe more of a chance to choose your own route than the previous years.

onceinalifetime

really? i was planning on just gearing down and running a brake. what's a good gear for atl riding?

yes. really. i rode something around 48x17 last year (not geared down, but definitely way more knee-friendly than the crazy s**** all you st pete kids ride) and destroyed myself. i hurt bad afterwards. it was a "walker-at-thirty" kind of hurt, too.

there wasn't even a category for fixed riders/teams, as there were only two teams who actually thought it would be a good idea to even try it (the out of town team and the messenger team that only rode the first part of the race).

it was also bonehurt cold all night. if i go, i'm definitely bringing a road bike and all my clothes and (hopefully) i'll be spending some money on real cold weather gear.

although it might not be as bad to ride a fixed gear if the weather is remotely tolerable this year.

my two cents.

JoshFrank

Everything is pretty obvious until the leg between Skate Escape and No Brakes. I planned on shooting through the park before I knew of this davematthewesbullchit. The solo cat seems more popular this year, 6 riders pre-registered as of last night.

Oh, no, don't bring anything for cold weather!!!!! We'll be lucky if it dips below 95 in the afternoon. I've renamed this the 24 Hour How Much Can I Not Wear and Still Be Remotely Legal race.

So yeah, prepare for hotness weather-wise.

JoshFrank

Hot as fresh crap around here. I was planning on rocking bibs and a mesh safety vest;) or would that just make things hotter?

TimArchy

I was planning on rocking bibs and a mesh safety vest;)

And if you do I'll be happy for every single mile that separates us on that fateful day.

JoshFrank

That's it, the eagle is going back on my helmet as well!

purplebike

I was planning on rocking bibs and a mesh safety vest

YES!

And +1004958 to the eagle too.

TimArchy

Josh, I'm kicking you in the nuts when I get back. And you too Jes for supporting him.

JoshFrank

You can't kick em as hard as I can myself. Today was training, 3 solid hours of riding in 100 deg heat index followed by 2 hours on the trainer:eek:

TimArchy

and that proves what? That you don't have anything better to do?
I won this race with no training in freezing temps on a bike that I threw together from spare parts the week before...
yeah...that was pretty stupid of me.

You'd better kick some ass.

JoshFrank

:):D:eek:

TimArchy

:):D:eek:

Can I officially revoke your smiley rights for that?

In the BikeForums charter it clearly states:

"Posts must contain at least one character, be it letter, number or symbol. Posts which contain only annoying a** smileys or gratuitious reposts of long strings of pictures for no more purpose than saying "nice bike" can subject the poster to harassment from other forum members and/or a maximum fine of one working bicycle, to be paid immeadietly upon demand"

Malicious posters will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

JoshFrank

I love you Kyle:love:

TimArchy

Show me how much you love be by kicking MF ass. I'm so pissed I'm not going to be there to do it for myself.
I'll get my alleycat fix here sometime soon. CHIANG MAIlstrom is in the works.

purplebike

Uh. You're saving that until March when I'm there, right? For serious.

And Kyle, you're getting kinda angsty... ;)

JoshFrank

Great, I feel like I'm marked now, hopefully that's just paranoia. Good thing I find paranoia motivating. In other news there has been a lot of sh!t talking at PTB. Nate and I have a side bet, the prize kitty contains his hairdo and my beard!

sloaccord

questions regarding route, coming from someone never been in atlanta:
is piedmont park where the DMB concert i heard about is going to be? if it isnt, why wouldnt you just blast traffic-free through the park instead of the big five-block roundy-round after skate escape?
how bad is dekalb ave? i see some opportunites there, if the road isnt a death-trap.
at the ten st/virginia ave junction it looks like you could head south to 78 instead of east onto virginia. it's hard to tell on google, but is that a ridable road?

man, i wish i could come early and find all the fun shortcuts the hometowners will know.

JoshFrank

DMB is in Piedmont park, probably no blasting through until early sunday am. Dekalb isn't anymore of a death trap than any other road in this city. Ponce De Leon Ave (78) is a six lane road, it's ridable but hilly and traffic is kinda fast. Are you racing on a team or solo?

EDIT:Also, 10th street along the park will be closed during the DMB BS;)

TimArchy

You should feel like you're marked. I've got a bomb strapped to your bike that will explode when your cadence drops below 60rpm. Kinda like Speed if Keanu Reeves had a beard and the bus was Italian made.

Anyway, the fear is what makes you ride when you know you should be in bed. Just make sure you have plans that don't involve riding a bike for a few days afterward. The times I did it I walked to work for three days.

TimArchy

Uh. You're saving that until March when I'm there, right? For serious.

And Kyle, you're getting kinda angsty... ;)

I'm not angsty. I'm going through geek withdrawl. No one to talk to about bikes here...
I'm sure I'll organize more than one race. If this one turns out well. If I wait till march to do one my head might explode.

TimArchy

[crickets chirp, voice echoes]
Huh... Guess everybody's out training. Since when did people on bikeforums ride their bikes?

JoshFrank

Yep, lots of training. Thursday I'm going to try to do 150 boring miles on the SCT to peak, then I'm spending a few days in Ohio. Then it's on. BTW their isn't going to be any special incentive to ride fixed (outside of the No Brakes omnium) so now I have to decide between the Bridgestone or the Look.

After the race I guess me or purplebike will have to start the "we miss TimArchy" thread.

purplebike

Apparently he doesn't miss us, "Thailand is the easiest place to live." huh.

Uh, so, I feel kinda jipped because I can't ride anything other than fixed, but that's not being taken into consideration. Whatever. Maybe I'll switch to SS or something.

Ride the Bridgestone, she's pretty.

Oh, and I plan on some major training time with Matthias Catsler this weekend...
